Weekly Events & News Update

Events This Week - October 9, 2023

Last week we asked: Is the growth of online income sources a concern for our workforce?

Last Poll Results: 28.2% said "yes", while 26.4% claimed it's not. 45.5% wasn't sure how it mattered.

The concern could stem from youth wanting to delve into more digital industries such as streaming as opposed to necessary positions in our workforce.

From Dock Waivers to Serving on the Board

Chamber Relevance Strong as Ever

A temporary moratorium on dock waivers along the New River is a recommendation going to the Board of Directors this month via the Marin Industry and Government Affairs Council.

Navigation up-river by larger yachts is increasingly becoming an issue. This moratorium would give interested parties an opportunity to review in detail the waterway and what makes the most sense for property and ship owners and the marina industry. See moratorium language here.

Business will continue to be front and center as it relates to adaptation and mitigation as part of a resilient economy. That’s the message your Chamber sent through me during my speech to city mayors and staff, the US Army Corps of Engineers, and the Southeaster Water Management District, at a meeting last week.

American payrolls grew by 336,000 new positions in September, according to the State Department. This marks 33 consecutive months of job growth. Unemployment in Broward County moderated to 3.1% as the spread between open jobs and those looking tightened.

Watch for continued expansion of the cruise industry as more ships and ports are built leading to destination cruising to resort islands owned by industry leaders. The number of ports will double in the Caribbean and North Atlantic.

Our BusinesssF1rst Council is meeting with senior level executives as part of our business retention and expansion efforts. If you would like to schedule an interview, please contact liza@ftlchamber.com, and a BusinessF1rst team member will be assigned. All discussions are confidential.

If you are interested in serving on the Chamber’s Board of Directors, Friday, Oct. 13, is the last day to submit nominations. Click here to fill out an application. The Nominating Committee will notify you once the slate has been finalized.

This Friday is our kick-off for our FPL Washington Summit 2024 with a virtual organizational steering committee meeting. Nearly 100 Delegates will travel to Washington, DC, May 13-16, staying at the Hotel Washington. Janna Lhota, Holland + Knight, will be leading Delegates in meeting with Congress and key Administration officials on business issues. You can join the meeting here.
