Moderna Launches AI Academy in Partnership with CMU
Moderna, Inc., a biotechnology company pioneering messenger RNA therapeutics and vaccines, announced the launch of its Artificial Intelligence (AI) Academy, in partnership with the Department of Statistics & Data Science and the Tepper School of Business. This unique program will deliver a tailored curriculum structured for working professionals focused on topics, including data quality and data visualization, statistical thinking and models, machine learning algorithms and AI ethics.

Former Doctor Turns Pandemic Historian and Sleuth
For four decades, Paul Weinbaum, M.D., treated high-risk obstetrical patients. Today, he has partnered with his History Ph.D. advisor Edmund Russell to investigate the history of pandemics. Weinbaum is examining the similarities and differences between the 1918 pandemic and our current pandemic as it continues to unfold.

Why Clickbait Makes You Curious and Caloric Content Doesn’t
People need information to make decisions but often struggle when this information challenges existing beliefs, portends bad outcomes or sheds light on a previously hidden problem. Russell Golman, associate professor in the Social & Decision Sciences Department, and his team have developed a unified theory that integrates a wide range of motives. Their results suggest that grabbing attention drives curiosity, but people have preferences on what grabs their attention.

Shanmugaraj Selected for Dietrich Teaching Honor
Nisha Shanmugaraj (DC 2013, 2022) is the 2021 Dietrich College Graduate Student Teaching Award recipient. Shanmugaraj, a Ph.D. candidate in the Rhetoric program in the Department of English, received this honor for her dedication to her students, pedagogical innovation and exemplary commitment to professional development as an educator and a scholar.
