The Noble Horse
Myth, Mystery & Motion
“I feel as a horse must feel when the beautiful cup is given to the jockey.”
— Edgar Degas
Horses have long been a source of fascination for artists due to their beauty, grace, and strength. As a result, horses have been featured in works of art throughout the centuries, from ancient cave paintings to modern interpretations. Many of the world’s most famous works of art feature horses, including the work of artists such as George Stubbs, Edgar Degas, Peter Paul Rubens, and Leonardo da Vinci to name a few. Horses have been used as symbols of power, freedom, and nobility as well as mythical symbols ingrained in lore and literature. Enjoy these member artists interpretation of that unique bond, respect, admiration, and enthusiasm that continues between artists and horses.

Royal Polo

My journey through art so far has taken me through many of the mediums available for use. I started with pencils, crayons, oil and moved on to photography, watercolor, pastel and now acrylic. I always use my themes to explore the hidden part of our daily lives. I enjoy  expressing emotions and feelings since they are the essence of who we are even though we mostly think they are mundane. I like music, dance and the feelings associated with them.

Leap Of Faith

Painting is perhaps a reflection of my inner value to the world around me. I am intrigued by images that are ambiguous, subtle and not completely defined, are layered, overlapped and intertwined. I like visual languages that are subliminal, suggestive but not overly descriptive. A good balance of abstract and representational contents leaves room for viewer's imagination.

The Storm

I paint the way I explore the rugged mountains where I live, always pushing to see what is over the next hill, searching for the unexpected. Artifacts of the creative process can be seen in the rich varied textures, raw worked surfaces, fragile subtle marks and veiled light qualities created by working and reworking the piece.   As one image comes into focus another is fading away, retaining a piece of the previous while hinting at what might come next.

Cissy Hamilton is a Kentucky native who began to draw at an early age and went on to earn a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design. Growing up in the Bluegrass, horses were a favorite subject. This interest has continued with depictions of various equine events.

Lyric Suite

A sculptor of metal horses, Marcia has worked at her art for more than a decade. She grew up in a Midwest equestrian culture, grooming, training and riding horses since early childhood. Her intimate knowledge of the conformation, performance and allure of horses translates seamlessly into authentic sculptural renderings. Her pieces range from tabletop size to larger than life.

Red Leads

My paintings are bright and very colorful my use of brush strokes allow me to capture motion in my own technique. My paintings evoke the style that I have developed. The artists I admire the most are the artists who can paint in a style, which they too have developed themselves. In this world we live in so many imitate the style of others, those who can develop their own style, are true talented artists.

Sunrise Over The XIT

Buck has been a professional artist for almost 30 years and declares, "Art is my life!" He hopes to inspire in others a love for the scenery and wildlife of the American West. He wants to spark admiration and respect for those rugged individuals who came before us. Why? Because they blazed remarkable trails for us to follow!

Equus I

For the past 10 years, I have passed countless hours in the presence of horses. I have been drawing, painting and sketching, making marks somewhere on something for as long as I can remember. It is an irrepressible impulse within my hands wherever I go.

The Bay

I love large formats and brilliant color. My true passion is color theory and design and how compositions can play an emotional role in the viewer. Art has always been a passion of mine. I knew from a very early age that art was going to be a strong influence in my life and that I wanted to know as much about art as I could possibly learn. I still strive to learn something new every day.

What happened when we surveyed our artist members to find out what they listen to while they create their artwork?

Well, they did not disappoint!

The results & featured artists will be presented in an article coming in June.

Here is a sneak peek!

"I listen to music all of the time when I am painting and also when I teach my classes. In my studio the music can range from country to pop to classical usually depending what I'm working on . If I am working on a landscape or some type of nature related painting I would tend to listen to country or Bob Dylan while if I'm working on something more abstract or expressionist I will go to Bjork , or Lorde or opera ,music that I find more cerebral".

Dance Of the three Graces

"While painting I am often inspired by the music in my playlists. My paintings tell stories so with music as a backdrop anything can happen. I use vintage imagery so music from the 30's and 40's is a favorite, but I also paint strong women, so I can easily go from Glenn Miller to Beyoncé to keep the inspiration going. I find that the tempo of the music I listen to inspires each stoke of my paintbrush. When I paint the music I choose is very important to what I am working on".

The Beat Goes On

"I just realized because of this article that my very diverse taste in music does indeed mirror my lack of a definite “style” to my artwork. I’m so enthralled by diverse sounds and voices that even though it sometimes bothers me that I paint a variety of subject matter in styles ranging from detailed to abstract why should I limit myself in this limitless world".

The Illustrated Life

Two artists reflecting life and human nature as they see it.

In An American Classic Style Of Representation,
artists such as Norman Rockwell, N.C. Wyeth and Joseph Leyendecker helped to define a nation’s identity.

In that same vein, these member artists bring us the tapestry of life, as they see it, with their charming and thought provoking paintings.

Childs Play

From early childhood I have always had a very active imagination. I believed dolls and toys came to life when humans were absent or sleeping; I spent time on “hunting expeditions”, armed with a capped glass jar (holes punched in the cover, of course!) in order to find and capture a fairy. I had no problem fabricating fantastic worlds out of ordinary objects and creating interactive dramas with playmates, based upon my vision.

It Was A Very Good Day

As an artist, I most enjoy my work when something- be it an expression, a scene, an object of curiosity or beauty- catches my attention and calls me to encapsulate it onto canvas, telling it’s story.

Calling The Play

I find it to be a continual and satisfying challenge, transforming a vision of my mind’s eye into a painting, in a manner that captures a new beholder with the same beauty that inspired me.
When an onlooker becomes a participant, even for one magical moment, lifted from the ordinaire of life to the intangible extraordinary, I feel I have successfully done my job.

Sara's Dollhouse

"I am an Illustrator by profession and an Artist by heart".

I am a realist storyteller, I've always been intrigued by human natures intricate details. I find the physical, spiritual and social awareness of the human condition utterly beautiful.
Beauty Parlor
It's the complexity of life's ordeals combined with the subtleties of life's emotion, struggles and the environment in which humanity occupy that I attempt to capture in my mix media style of painting and drawing. My work speaks to the human narrative, but is imbued with a degree of mystery that rouses viewers to imagine themselves in the scene, creating their own narratives.
Homeless Woman
I've always preferred acrylic to any other medium because of the richness and depth of the colors; also the resilience of the medium. I can do so much to it, with it, and it has manipulative qualities when added to other mediums.
Brazilian Merchant
"Painting is a passion I have had since childhood. The process of creativity is what interests and drives me."

How will we find you?

Artspan searches for artwork the same way Buyers do.

Whether we are putting together a Themed Collection or looking for member's artwork to include in our Newsletters, it starts with a general search.
