Dietrich Alumni Rise to the Challenge

This year, two Dietrich College alumni are among the 23 identified by CMU for Tartans on the Rise, alumni who are advancing society through technology, celebrating human expression and elevating industries, communities and people everywhere.

A Recipe for Understanding

A Grand Challenge Seminar helps students explore Palestinian and Israeli history, culture and conflict through the lens of food. Topics range from regional and culinary history to gender roles in Israeli and Palestinian communities to the ways displacement and military occupation affect the production of produce.

The Washington Semester Program provides an array of diverse internship positions whether it be on Capitol Hill, at a think tank or in one of the Smithsonian buildings.

  • Douse-A-Dean: Support Richard Scheines, Bess Family Dean of the Dietrich College, in this annual University Police fundraiser on Friday, April 14, benefitting Special Olympics Pennsylvania. Donate online.


  • DeGroot Lecture and Reception: Friday, April 14 at 4 p.m. in Posner A35. Join the Statistics & Data Science Department for the 2023 DeGroot Lecture featuring Edward I. George, Universal Furniture Professor Emeritus of Statistics and Data Science, University of Pennsylvania. The event is open to the entire CMU community. A reception will follow.


  • Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences Brunch & Buggy: Saturday, April 15 from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the Baker Hall Patio. Enjoy a light brunch and see racers up close. Open to the Dietrich College community.


  • Dietrich College Deep Dives: These engaging, in-depth presentations about critical political and societal issues through the lens of the humanities, social sciences and related fields will be offered in person and virtually this year. The 2023 series will focus on the role of the Supreme Court in American life. Learn more and register for the events.


  • April 24, 5–6 p.m. ET. “The Supreme Court on Academic Freedom and Freedom of Speech,” featuring Mary Jo Dively, vice president and General Counsel, Carnegie Mellon University.


  • May 1, 4:30–5:30 p.m. ET. “The Supreme Court on Affirmative Action in Higher Education,” featuring Ken Gormley, president of Duquesne University. Presented in partnership with the CMU Pre-Law Society’s Thomas Kerr Lecture Series.


  • Alumni Events: From cherished in-person Carnegie Mellon traditions to virtual learning experiences with researchers at the cutting-edge of their fields, CMU offers a variety of events for alumni to connect with each other and the university, expand their knowledge and networking opportunities, and make cherished memories together.
