Nathaniel T. Allen (1823–1903), his wife, Caroline Allen (1830–1915), and his three daughters, Fanny Allen (1857–1913), Sarah Allen (1861–1897), and Lucy Allen (1867–1943) were teachers at The West Newton English and Classical School, known as “The Allen School,” in West Newton, Mass. This progressive school had co-ed classes and enrolled African American students. During its 50-year history, over 5,000 students attended the school, many who boarded with the Allen family, and many became future writers, doctors, lawyers, teachers, activists, soldiers, a Supreme Court justice, and at least one actor.
