President's Message: Seasons Greeting!
Dear TCA Members,

What can I say about 2020? Definitely one for the record books.

Who imagined that 2020 would bring the first global pandemic in over 100 years and who among us actually prepared in advance for the mayhem that was 2020? The question is rhetorical of course. From my perspective, it feels like we looked both ways before crossing the road like we have done for 102 years in succession … and then got hit by an airplane!

I suppose if we are completely honest, it could have been worse. COVID-19 has decimated some sectors of our economy. Construction has actually fared pretty well, all things considered. A crisis this big, however, inevitably catalyzes huge changes, many of which will be permanent. It’s hard to imagine a sector that won’t be transformed, restructured or in extreme cases removed entirely. COVID is after all a catastrophic event.

Looking forward to 2021, none of us knows for certain what is in store. As Geoff Smith from ED pointed out in the keynote address that launched Buildings Week in early December, “nobody is even pretending to know what the future will bring.” Certainly not me.

Buildings Week Opening Keynote Address With Geoff Smith Recap
On Monday, November 30, 2020, the first-ever Virtual Buildings Week kicked off with a highly relevant insightful keynote address with Geoff Smith, President & CEO, EllisDon, presented by the Toronto Construction Association and ConstructConnect™ Canada.

In his speech, Geoff addressed the unconscious bias in the construction industry, saying, "the construction industry needs to look more like Canada and called on all leaders to end racism in the industry."

Geoff also spoke on the following three points, consolidation in the construction industry, digitization, and margins and risks. After the keynote session concluded, John Mollenhauer, President & CEO, Toronto Construction Association, and Mark Casaletto, President, ConstructConnect™ Canada, discussed the state of Canada’s construction industry today.

If you missed the opening keynote, you can watch the recording of the session here.

TCA 2020 Innovative Product Award Winners Announced At Buildings Week!

The winners of the 2020 TCA Innovative Product Award (IPA) were announced on Friday, December 4, 2020, at the first-ever Virtual Buildings Week event. The IPA Award (formerly known as TIPTA) was established in 1994 by TCA and is open to any supplier who can demonstrate the development and/or the use of innovative technologies in their respective industries.

A huge congratulations to this year's top three winners:

First Place Winner... Bio-Module 2
The Bio-Module 2 is unique from other green roofs as it combines the lessons learned from other green roof systems and their most effective materials to create an extensive system, which balances cost, weight and performance to truly change the industry. The following is a list of challenges which the Bio-Module 2 was designed to address: Water Retention; Wind Uplift; Product Waste; Ease of Installation; Ease of Transportation; Vegetation Establishment; Cost; Material Erosion and Longevity, and Irrigation Implementation.

Second place: Intuitive AI
Intuitive AI is a technology firm that develops cutting-edge artificial intelligence to empower healthier buildings. Healthy buildings are the key to controlling and preventing the spread of infections.

Intuitive saw that the key to reducing the spread of infections was to eliminate touch-points by developing contactless systems that adapt and change as buildings do.

Third place: Mitrex
Product:

Mitrex, produces integrated solar products that meet the construction and design needs of builders, architects, engineers, and developers. Mitrex make easily installed, aesthetically pleasing building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) that extend a structure’s energy-generating potential down to the vertical walls.

With Mitrex solar integrated technology, any building can become a micro power plant.

Safety Year-End Message From The Prevention Council

The end of the year is quickly approaching and we’re all looking forward to a brighter 2021. It is important that all Ontarians to remain focused on safety and to use the year end as a time to review safety plans for the New Year.

It hasn’t been an easy year, mainly due to the challenges we all faced related COVID-19 and how it has impacted our lives and our work. In addition, some hard-working Ontarians lost their lives while doing their day-to-day jobs. In December alone, there have been jobsite fatalities in London, Oshawa and Toronto. These recent jobsite fatalities highlight the fact that we need to proactively apply a safety lens to everything we do.

During the last few weeks of 2020, the PC recommends that we deliver on our safety responsibilities and follow these expectations:
