During the month of November, we would like to express our THANKS to ALL of our stakeholders who have supported us during these unprecedented times. This is uncharted territory for all of us but one thing remains constant and that is your dedication and commitment to our students, staff, and families.
Our community (churches, daycares, local businesses, non-profits, individuals, and many more) has truly risen above and beyond to assist our students and educators during remote learning. We have many partners across the county who have dedicated their time to ensure our students have access to reliable internet, are logged on for their classes, learning, and are successful. They have become the school away from school and have spent countless hours volunteering and working hard to create a positive learning environment. COVID 19 Communication Protocol and Dashboard
As part of our communication process related to positive COVID-19 cases, Craven County Schools will be updating a district dashboard to display the number of NEW positive cases three times a week. This information will be posted on the district website every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 5:00 pm. In an effort to protect the confidentiality of our staff and students we will not release the name of the school.The dashboard is located at:

Parents of 7th Grade High-Performing Students:
The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Young Scholars Program application will open on January 11, 2021. The Young Scholars Program is a selective five-year, pre-college scholarship for high-performing 7th grade students with financial need. It provides academic advising, along with financial support for school, summer programs, internships, and other learning enrichment opportunities.
Eligible applicants should:
Be entering 8th grade in the fall of 2021.
Have earned all As and Bs since the beginning of 6th grade.
Reside in the U.S. and plan to attend high school in the U.S.
Demonstrate financial need with a maximum adjusted gross income of $95,000.

The AVID System in Craven County Schools
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is an instructional system that changes lives by helping schools shift to a more equitable, student-centered approach. AVID’s mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID is aligned with Craven County Schools’ mission, both dedicated to educating all learners for a changing, global landscape. The AVID instructional system has been instrumental in providing our AVID educators with a common language to ensure they are incorporating best practices into every lesson. This common approach to instruction supported our educators when they made the transition from face to face instructional delivery to remote learning in March of 2020.
The core strategies of the AVID instructional system are WICOR (writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading). AVID provides students with college and career readiness skills that live within these fundamentals. These skills include but are not limited to: focused note taking, collaborative study groups, goal setting, and future planning resources. AVID provides educators and students with tools to scaffold rigorous coursework for all students to increase understanding, tasking educators with growing students’ abilities over time. As students progress through the AVID system on their campus they become more independent learners who can complete progressively rigorous work.
AVID is organized on all secondary campuses as cohorts of students within their building. It is a class that occurs during the school day and includes graded coursework. At the elementary campuses AVID instruction is intentionally implemented in all grade levels, the cohort model is not part of the system. As the AVID system grows on a campus ALL students have access to quality instruction through trained educators. AVID professional learning is delivered to content and grade level specific educators through AVID Center and continued professional learning is offered through the district. This professional learning is requested by each site and supports the work of the school improvement goals, supporting Craven County Schools in continuous improvement. Craven County Schools has committed to providing funding to give educators access to this quality professional learning. Currently Craven County Schools has over 210 trained educators and administrators across 7 campuses and central services.
Schools in Craven County that are currently implementing the AVID instructional system are: AVID instructional system are: Oaks Road Academy, HJ MacDonald Middle, New Bern High, West Craven Middle, West Craven High, and Havelock High. Grover C Fields Middle School is in a planning year, preparing for their first cohort of AVID students in the 2021-2022 school year.

The 2020-2021 Principal of the Year is Announced
New Bern, NC- Today, during a surprise announcement Dr. Eleanor Patrick, Principal of Oaks Road Academy, was named the 2020-2021 Principal of the Year for Craven County Schools. In her role as Principal of the Year, she will serve as the local advisor to the Board of Education and will represent Craven County Schools in local, regional and state events.
Dr. Patrick was one of six finalists that interviewed with a local selection committee on November 2nd. The finalists, nominated by their peers, all did a wonderful job sharing their work and accomplishments. We commend these principals on being selected as part of the process: Mr. Todd Bradley(CEC), Mr. William Byland(HMS), Ms. Debbie Hurst(WJG), Mr. Dan Palimetakis(VFL), and Mr. Jerry Simmons(NBH).
During the selection process, Dr. Patrick shared her journey at Oaks Road Academy by stating, “Upon my arrival at Oaks Road Elementary I found staff members discouraged and doubtful.” Once Dr. Patrick engaged staff members in the work of redesigning a school and began putting instructional measures in place to ensure student success. Within one-year student performance improved in the areas of Science and Math proficiency and the school "Met Growth". Oaks Road has consistently "Met Growth" for the last 4 years. Dr. Patrick is quick to point out, “Although we are not satisfied with growth alone, we understand that student growth is the beginning of reaching greater proficiency.”
Dr. Patrick also discussed the important of forming relationships. She stated, “Establishing relationships with family and community members is at the heart of Oaks Road! Continuous efforts are made to invite parents and families into the school through events such as Bring Your Parent to School Day, parent Lunch and Learn activities, and our Title 1 Parent Nights.
Keeping great teachers is at the heart of the work of Dr. Eleanor Patrick. She shared her philosophy of getting and keeping great teachers by sharing, “What keeps a good teacher at a school are structured, sustained, intensive professional development programs that allow new teachers to observe others, to be observed by others, and to be a part of networks where all teachers share together, grow together, and learn to respect each other’s work.”
Congratulations to Dr. Eleanor Patrick for this very deserving recognition. We are very proud of you and all you have accomplished as you support the Oaks Road Owls in reaching successes. As your students would say, Hoot, hoot, hooray!

Immunization Extension-Clarification
Parents or guardians must submit proof of required immunizations and health assessments for students attending North Carolina public schools, private or religious educational institutions, child care facilities as well as colleges and universities by Dec. 30, 2020. For new students, parents or guardians must present proof of immunizations within 30 calendar days of their first date of attendance. Beginning Dec. 31, 2020 students will be excluded from in-person and remote learning until parents or guardians can provide proof that their students have received the required vaccinations.
