Astros Foundation Announces $1 million Donation to Build Baseball and Softball Fields at Texas Southern University
The Astros Foundation announced a $1 million donation to build baseball and softball fields at TSU. They made the announcement during a pregame ceremony at Minute Maid Park during the Cactus Jack HBCU Classic.

The baseball team currently plays off campus at MacGregor Park. The softball team currently plays at Memorial Park.

TSU will break ground and begin building the new stadiums later this year.

Texas Southern University Enters $1 million Collaboration with PING x HIDEOKI
Texas Southern University has entered a groundbreaking collaboration with PING x HIDEOKI that will secure custom gear and apparel for TSU’s men’s and women’s golf programs and several student-centered initiatives through 2028.

The collaboration provides up to $1 million over the next five years through a comprehensive set of opportunities available to members of the golf program and other TSU students. In addition to providing upscale, exclusively-designed golf attire including outerwear, pants, shirts, footwear, bags and accessories, PING x HIDEOKI will also embark on collaborative opportunities with TSU’s fashion, engineering and art programs by way of internships, scholarships and unique enrichment projects.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (TX-18) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08), during his first-ever visit to Texas Southern University, announced $2 million in federal funding to support TSU’s Institute for Urban Public Health and Housing Equity (UPHHE) and the Urban Public Health Initiative (UPHI).

Texas Southern University Celebrates "Black Resilience" During Black History Month
Celebrating resilience and the more than 400 years of survival while still uplifting the contributions, achievements and impact of Black heritage and culture in America was the central theme for Texas Southern University’s Black History Month Convocation. This year’s theme was “Black Resilience.”
 
TSU President Lesia L. Crumpton-Young presided over the annual gathering that paid homage to the generations of African Americans persevered and overcame adversity while still impacting life and culture in the United States. The keynote speaker was two-time TSU alumna, TaKasha Francis Esq., who now serves as the City of Houston’s Director of Neighborhoods.
 
“The Black community has always known resilience, whether welcoming it or not,” Francis said. “And in that resilience, we find more strength, innovation, and hope to move the needle forward.

College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Graduates Exceed National Passage Rate on Licensure Exam 
Graduates of Texas Southern University’s Joan M. Lafleur College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (COPHS) class of 2022 outperformed the state and national first-attempt passage rate on the pharmacy licensure exam (NAPLEX).

TSU graduates earned an 85-percent passage rate, exceeding the national rate of 79.6-percent and the state rate of 79-percent, giving COPHS the second highest passage rate out of the nine pharmacy schools in the state of Texas.

Texas Southern University Named Among Top Master of Public Administration Online Programs
Texas Southern University’s Executive Master of Public Administration (EMPA) has been named one of the best online MPA programs in the nation.

In the Best Online MPA Programs for 2023 rankings released by OnlineMastersDegrees.org (OMD) TSU’s EMPA program is ranked #5. The rankings are based on key factors including online component availability, student/faculty ratio, tuition affordability, and the accessibility of student and career support services.

"This ranking is reflective of the tireless work our students, faculty, and staff do daily, and the support they receive from our alumni," said Dr. Michael Adams, professor of Political Science and Public Administration and founding director of the EMPA program in TSU's Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs.

Texas Southern University launches Black History Month celebration with calls for resilience (Feb. 9)
Spring Career Fair set for February 24
The Texas Southern University Spring Career Fair will take place Friday, February 24 at the TSU Recreation Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

More than 150 employers will be on campus to recruit TSU students. The fair is also open to alumni.

Tiger Nation prepares for TSU Day at the Capital
Tiger Nation heads to Austin for TSU Day at the Capital on Tuesday, March 7. This is an opportunity for students, alumni, faculty, staff, and supporters of the University to advocate on TSU's behalf with legislators face-to-face.

TSU has submitted a $1 billion Legislative Appropriations Request (LAR) to the legislature to support: Academic Centers of Excellence, a Research Amplification Fund, the College of Transdisciplinary Studies, Academic and Student Resource Initiative, Mental Health Institute, and Campus Health and Safety programs.

Anyone who would like to participate is required to attend a training session on Wednesday, March 1. Click here to register.

US Coast Guard surprises TSU student with scholarship and future commission
Augusta Singleton got the surprise of his life this month that places him on a trajectory for a career of service to the nation. He has been selected to be part of the U.S. Coast Guard's College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative (CSPI).

As part of CSPI, Singleton will receive a full scholarship to cover his final two years of college, enlist into the U.S. Coast Guard completing basic training during the summer, and be commissioned as an officer upon graduation.

Singleton is a computer science major from Marshall, Texas.
TSU Alumnus to Sing National Anthem at Chicago Bulls Game
Texas Southern University alumnus Seronsa Charles will be singing the National Anthem at a Chicago Bulls game. He will be singing as part of the newly-formed Chicago HBCU Alumni Choir. This will be the choir's first public performance.

Charles is a 1984 graduate with a degree in business management. A Chicago native, he is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. He is also the president of the Chicago chapter of the Texas Southern University National Alumni Association.
TSU Baseball Sweeps Wiley College in Home Opener
Kobe Head and Domenic Martinez turned in dominant pitching performances as the Texas Southern University baseball team swept their home-opening doubleheader 13-1 (five innings) and 10-0 (seven innings) over Wiley College in mercy rule fashion.

Up next, the Tigers will host Arlington Baptist for a four-game set on Friday and Saturday. First pitch for Friday's first game will be at 3 p.m. CT while Saturday's Game 1 first pitch is slated for 1 p.m. CT.
Women's Golf Earns 3rd Place Finish, Ashlie Hobbs 2nd Overall

he Texas Southern women's golf team concluded their efforts with a third place finish at the ASU Spring Classic hosted by Alabama State University.

Junior Ashlie Hobbs tied in 2nd place for the tournament on a solid 189 (76-74-39) as she was only three strokes behind the individual winner, Christian Williams, of Samford University. Junior Lyla Vaughn finished in 10th place on 202 (80-83-39).

The Tigers have a week off before heading back on the road as they will compete in the UTRGV Invitational hosted by The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in McAllen, Texas.
The Ocean of Soul Represents TSU in the Honda Battle of the Bands
The Texas Southern University Ocean of Soul traveled to Alabama to make its triumphant return to the Honda Battle of the Bands.

The Ocean was one of six bands selected to perform for what has historically been one of biggest showcases of HBCU marching bands.
