The Liberator Commenced 1 January 1831, Garrison Antislavery Banner
One of the first American abolitionists to demand immediate and complete emancipation of enslaved people, William Lloyd Garrison gave full voice to his radically abolitionist ideas in his newspaper, The Liberator. Each issue bore the motto “Our Country is the World, our Countrymen are all Mankind.” The Liberator continued to publish abolitionist articles until it closed in 1865, after the conclusion of the Civil War.
The banner pictured above was created to honor The Liberator and William Lloyd Garrison. It was displayed at antislavery fairs and festivals in the 19th century.

Announcing the History Source
High-quality primary sources are the key to making history relevant and meaningful for K–12 students. Yet teachers often lack the time to locate these materials and adapt them for the classroom. The best content is often hidden behind a paywall or not customizable for learners of all levels. Therefore, the MHS has launched the History Source, a free, easy-to-use resource hub for K–12 social studies, ELA, and civics classrooms. It offers primary source sets, drawn from the broad collections of the MHS, as well as teacher tools and resources that are adaptable and accessible for all learners.
