Thank you, Joyce Thomas, for 41 Years of Service!
After 41 years of service to the University of South Alabama, Joyce Thomas will retire on June 30, 2021. On March 3, 1980, Joyce began her career as a Library Assistant in the Cataloging Department of the University Library which is now the Marx Library. Several years later, Joyce was promoted to Library Technical Assistant II and supervised the student workers for the department. Along with these supervisory duties, she took the lead on the quality control check for cataloged books and media before these materials went to the Circulation Department. Joyce attended numerous professional development activities as well as volunteered for University-sponsored campus and community activities. Some other highlights of her years in the department include: cataloging the rare book collection before it was combined with the Archives collection, assisting in bringing up the first in-house online library system (NOTIS), and heading the Effective Operations Team to brainstorm ideas to make cataloging operations more efficient with NOTIS. She has been an invaluable member of the Cataloging Department and USA Libraries and her work ethic and expertise will be missed.

On behalf of the Cataloging Department, we wish Joyce Thomas all the best in retirement.

Doy Leale McCall Library partners with Honors College in David Mathews Center for Civic Life Grant
The David Mathews Center for Civic Life has again awarded a grant for the successful program "Immersive Civic Learning through Local and Community History: Emerging University Scholars and the Communities of Southern Alabama" which is a collaboration among Honors College faculty and the Office of Community Engagement, together with the McCall Library. The library's role includes supporting the development of an oral history project which, during the 2021-22 cycle, will expand the archives of the Mobile Creole Cultural and Historical Preservation Society (MCCHPS).
McCall Library Interim Director Deborah Gurt invited to present on Archives and Africatown
McCall Library Interim Director, Deborah Gurt, was invited to give a presentation to educators as part of the NEH Landmarks Virtual Educators Workshop at Spring Hill College. This workshop for educators will focus on understanding and teaching the complex history and important legacy of Africatown.
Educators from across the country will participate in this week-long learning encounter with the story of the Clotilda, and the autonomous community built by the survivors of that ordeal.

IBISWorld Additions
The University Libraries have expanded the resources available through IBISWorld to include the following modules: the Specialized Industry Reports and the COVID-19 Impact Tool

The Specialized Industry Reports includes smaller industries in the United States that were not covered in our previous IBISWorld subscription. They include small businesses, entrepreneurial endeavors, and health related industries such as dialysis centers and electronic medical records.

The COVID-19 Impact Tool is a spreadsheet that allows you to look at the effect COVID-19 has had on a particular industry in terms of employment, openness, and wages.

For the COVID-19 Impact Tool, the US Local Data Tool and the US Trade Exposure are the modules available to the University of South Alabama.
