The Friendship and Family between Joseph Greenleaf and Robert Treat Paine
Joseph Greenleaf and Robert Treat Paine were correspondents prior to becoming brothers-in-law—Greenleaf married Paine’s sister, Abigail Paine, on 17 October 1749. The earliest letter in the MHS collection between the two friends is Greenleaf’s short note on 10 May 1746. The men continue to write to each other for decades with their language becoming more loving and familial. This is evident in the 27 March 1755 letter from Greenleaf where he closes with “You see I have wrote with the freedom of a friend, tho’ perhaps not with that Correctness that would be agreeable to you, but I must pray you to read as a friend & not as a Critic...I have not a word more to add, but that I am yr. hearty friend, and Loving brother.” Explore their correspondence online.
