New England Lightships
Join us for New England Lightships, the first event of the VML Cultural Series 2021, on Thursday, September 23 from 6:00 - 7:15 p.m. in the Library Plaza Program Room. This lecture will be presented by South Shore historian Bob Jackman. From 1820 to 1975, lightships served at locations where ships were imperiled by ledges or shoals, but the ocean depth was too deep for lighthouse construction. Duty aboard lightships was far more dangerous than life at lighthouses.
Jackman will offer an insightful account of an often overlooked aspect of New England maritime history. This event is free and open to the public; no registration required.
