Dear Members, Stakeholders and Supporters,
Some bad news to start with, and then the good news!

Our referee situation across Ontario and right down to the grassroots level is in a crisis state. Durham Region Soccer Association shared with Club Presidents last night that there are currently 130 referees for the 2022 Outdoor season when pre-pandemic there would be typically 570. That's 130 referees across an estimated 5500 games this summer. Ontario Soccer are working hard to encourage referees back to the game who have left predominantly because of long delays after the pandemic or extreme referee abuse. The reality is that we may see games cancelled or an official who is out of their depth.
As parents we can help ease this problem but it won't be a quick fix.

1. If you have a son or daughter that is 14 or older, speak to them about refereeing. A great way to earn some good money, keep fit and build a strong leadership skill set. We can build referee schedules around the game and training nights for any players interested. Get into refereeing by following this LINK.

2. Respect the referee. We can't say this enough but further abuse will mean that we don't turn this around in 2022. We all complete the Respect in Sport course, we all understand what respect and decency should look like, we all need to model proper behaviour for our children.

3. You have a voice - use it wisely. Referee feedback is acceptable at the right time and in the right manner. Put your observations in an email and send it to David. Feedback, provided it's constructive and identifies the game, date and time can help us support referees who may need it.

On a positive note, we want to say a huge thank you to Saikomal and Sujith our fantastic two interns from the Community Integration through Co-operative Education (CICE) program at Durham College. Both students have been with us once a week since the start of the year and learned about club marketing, registrations and facility operations. The guys now plan on volunteering through the summer with our All Abilities program, a fantastic way to share their enthusiasm for the game and further develop their soccer experience.

Logan Learns to Play
Logan longs to play soccer when he sees his classmates playing out on the field. Kicking the ball with his walker seems like a daunting task as he has grown up with Cerebral Palsy. When he is introduced to an inclusive and accessible All Abilities program, he finds himself surrounded by a community of friends, family and fun.

Logan Learns to play can be purchased at the Pickering Soccer Centre or via Amazon Canada for $15.00. Shipping is extra.

To purchase from the Pickering Soccer Centre, please contact Tammy at 905-831-9803 x 207, or email her at allabilities@pickeringfc.ca.
