Study: Pesticide Levels of Concern in Urban Streams Increasing

Largely because of the increased use in cities of fipronil and dichclorvos, 90 percent of urban streams had pesticide levels exceeding a level of concern for fish and water dwelling insects from 2002 to 2011, according to a recently issued U.S. Geological Survey report. Only 53 percent of urban streams contained pesticides exceeding the Aquatic Life Benchmark for the decade spanning 1992-2001. As NPMA continues to pursue industry stewardship initiatives we'd like to underscore the importance of this report as it relates to steps that PMPs and all other applicators can take to mitigate runoff.

Estimating Drywood Termite Spread and Damage in an Island Environment

The West Indian drywood termite, Cryptotermes brevis, is a wood-destroying pest that has been discovered living in tropical and sub-tropical environments worldwide, especially in coastal locations. This termite lives within dry, sound wood and entire colonies can be contained in pieces of wood as small as a picture frame. The cryptic nature of drywood termites, coupled with their economic importance and ability to be spread by humans, has made them a significant pest and focus of a new research paper. A large proportion of structures in the Azores archipelago, a chain of islands in the Atlantic Ocean with a population of 250,000, are infested with the West Indian drywood termite. A team of scientists estimated the current scope of infestation and estimated the cost of treating ($67 million) or rebuilding all infested structures ($225 million). They also predicted the future range of C. brevis in the Azores by using local and global weather data and population trends. Future treatment and repair estimates were calculated to be eight times the current values, largely due to the ease in which drywood termites can be spread (via furniture, structural timbers) and difficulty in detecting their presence before damage has occurred.
