NORTHERN MICHIGAN CHAMBER ALLIANCE SUPPORTS HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY BILLS
Supporting the ongoing recovery in downtowns, commercial corridors, and neighborhood business districts.

The pandemic has truly impacted the hospitality industry. In 2020, legislation was passed on Social Districts and Outdoor Dining to help Michigan restaurants survive.

The following three bills continue that support:

House Bill 5062 - Development District Licenses (Rep Bolden) - This clarifies that business spaces in new construction projects are eligible if they meet the requirements. Read more here

House Bill 5090 - Social District & Special Events (Rep. Clements) - Changes in this bill extent and improve upon the highly successful Social Districts as a tool to increase vibrancy and activate business districts. Read more here

COVID EIDL LOANS STILL AVAILABLE
Applications are still being accepted for the low-interest COVID EIDL program, which was designed to assist small business owners to hire and retain employees, and purchase equipment and inventory until December 31, 2021, or until funds run out.

Things you need to know:
  • Funding has increased from $500,000 to $2 Million for Qualified Applicants.
  • Funds can be used to pay and prepay commercial debt make payments on federal business debt.
  • All EIDL Loan payments will be deferred for two years after your loan origination date. 
  • Small Businesses requesting $500,000 or less will have a one-month exclusive application window until Friday, October 8, 2021.
  • A simpler application process for small businesses.
 
Businesses owners who have received previous loans through the SBA’s Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), Restaurant Revitalization Fund (RRF), or Shuttered Venue Operators Grant (SVOG) can still benefit from COVID EIDL. If you need assistance or have questions please go to www.sba.gov/local-assistance and connect with a local resource partner.
$2.1 BILLION MI NEW ECONOMY PLAN
On September 21, Governor Whitmer rolled out a 2.1 billion MI New Economy plan with three pillars. These pillars are intended to produce results of better jobs, better skills, and more people re-entering the workforce. They are also designed to encourage people to stay and move to Michigan.


Pillar #1 focuses on growing Michigan’s middle class by eliminating poverty and lifting families into the middle class with goals of increasing the number of adults with a post-secondary credential, lift 100,000 families out of working poverty, and provide access to low or no-cost childcare for 150,000 families.

Pillar #2 supports small businesses with goals that include being a Top 10 state in three areas: small business job growth and revenue, household income growth, and growth in venture capital funding.

Pillar #3 builds strong communities by obtaining 100% access to high-speed internet and 95% adoption by households along with 75,000 new or rehabilitated housing units.
