How to Keep Your Sanity If Your Student Is
Living at Home This Summer
They've had a taste of independence, adventure, and are definitely learning to be adults, but some may not be there yet. If your student is living with you over the summer, you may need a few tips to power through.

  1. Set Ground Rules, in writing.
  2. Set time aside for YOU.
  3. Set aside family time, too.
  4. Get extra support if you need it.

This article from Collegiate Parent goes into detail on these four points. Remember that you both are learning and growing and there may be some adjusting that needs to take place. Be patient with them, communicate your concerns, and most of all enjoy your time with them while they are home.
Quick Question of the Week!
Has your student secured housing for the fall semester?
Yes
No
Off-Campus Housing!!
If your student is living off-campus, please secure housing as soon as possible.
Personalized Visits for First Year Students
If your student has questions about how to pay for college, where to find jobs, or how to navigate campus to locate their classrooms, they may want to come to campus and have a personalized visit. They can meet with their Student Success Advisor to discuss changes to their course schedule or create a four-year education plan. They can also meet with their financial aid counselor, a professor, or a career advisor.

They can schedule a Personalized Visit to campus with one of our ACES (Assistant Coaches for Excellence and Success). By filling out the form below, ACES will create a unique, personalized visit to campus to ensure they accomplish all that they want to during their visit. Feel free to email us at aces@suu.edu or call 435-865-8484 or they can contact their assigned ACE directly if they have any questions.

If your student is an incoming student for Fall 2021, please schedule their visit here. If your student is a prospective student (in high school or still deciding which college is right for you), please visit SUU Admissions to schedule a tour.
Make sure your student is ready to go to college
consider these how-tos:

  • How to balance work and fun.
  • How to ask for help.
  • How to disconnect from distractions.
  • How to impress with a firm handshake.
  • How to manage stress and self-care.
  • How to manage time and responsibility.
  • How to stay motivated and persevere.
  • How to talk to your professors.
  • How to take care of your health.

Some of these things seem very easy but a lot of students have never done them. It might save your student some stress if you go over them before they leave.

As we begin summer semester, COVID guidelines on campus are shifting and will include the following:
  • SUU is now mask friendly. This means that students, faculty, staff, and visitors are welcome, but not required, to wear masks inside campus buildings.
  • Summer face-to-face classes will look like spring. In person attendance will not be required but students can be required to attend either in person or via Zoom. Face-to-face classes will be recorded, posted, and broadcasted. Extending this practice will allow an additional few months for those who are interested to receive the full vaccine cycle.
  • The on-campus COVID testing site has been suspended until further notice (this does not alter COVID testing for the Utah Shakespeare Festival). Testing was available for the first two weeks of the summer term and only 66 tests had been conducted, with four resulting in positive cases. With fewer students on campus and more people being vaccinated, there is less demand for testing. For those who would like to be tested, community resources for testing are still available including Cedar City InstaCare and TestUtah.
  • Faculty, staff and students should self-assess for COVID-19 symptoms daily before going to class, work or campus. If symptoms are present, please stay home.
  • If you test positive for COVID 19, please quarantine and inform anyone that you have recently been in contact with. Self-reporting and contact tracing will no longer be conducted by the University. Isolation and quarantine requirements still apply to those that test positive or are exposed to a person who has COVID--the specific timeframes and requirements, which vary depending on the circumstances and vaccination status, are available at the Utah Coronavirus website
  • Stay diligent and help keep campus clean. University employees and students should participate in frequent cleaning and disinfecting of high-touch areas. SUU Facilities will supply departments and instructional spaces with hand sanitizer, wipes, and cleaning disinfectant.
  • All Utahns 12 years and older are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. All faculty, staff, and students who would like to receive the vaccination should work directly with the Southwest Utah Public Health Department and other local locations providing vaccines.
We are continuing to monitor the situation and will follow all state and local procedures. We will update the campus community if anything changes or new information becomes available. Thank you for your patience and understanding during all of this.
If your student is struggling emotionally, physically, mentally, etc. and you aren't sure where to send them, please contact us and we will help you find the resources they need. parents@suu.edu or 435-865-8752
