As the Competitive teams finalize their rosters for the Indoor season, we thought it was time to focus some attention on our Recreational program. Recreational soccer is often described as the 'bread and butter' of club operations, the place where children get their first experiences in soccer, and the bedrock on which the player pyramid is built. Pickering FC is the only club in Durham Region that offers a practice night as well as a game night during the summer for Recreational players.
In 2017 we moved towards a 'station model' of practice for our younger age groups with mixed success. While families liked the skill development they wanted to see more game time, and improved leadership from our young leaders on the field. Since 2019, and the appointment of Hollie Babut as our Grassroots Director, we have been able to steadily improve on that on-field product with stronger youth coaches(our Game Leaders), and clear technical plans that improve the player experience and move players towards our U8 Grassroots program with more confidence and ability.
In 2022, we will welcome the next evolution in this program with the hiring of a Grassroots Recreational Director. This role will see the successful candidate oversee our weekend Recreational sessions from a technical perspective but also help parents on the sideline with program insights and guidance. The role will see technical and administration merge at the side of the field each week with the new hire providing coach and match official support, all in an effort to give our kids and their families the best experience.
