Huguley wins award
Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion James Huguley has won the 2021 See the Best in Me Award from Gwen’s Girls and the Black Girls Equity Alliance. Huguley will receive the award at the 6th Annual Equity Summit and Awards Ceremony September 22, 201 4-7pm. More information can be found here.
Jones wins teaching award
BASW Program Director Toya Jones has been named a 2021 Black Educator of the Year award by the State of the Black Learning (SBL). Dr. Jones received the award at a ceremony on August 13th at the SBL Conference. She was recognized for the outstanding work she is doing to positively impact the lives of Black students and contribute to a positive educational climate for Black students in our region.
PhD student receives grant
Doctoral student Laurenia Mangum, LMSW, has received a new grant award entitled, "Contraceptive use decision-making and uptake among Black women living with HIV" for $7,500 + additional research and mentorship resources from the Society of Family Planning. Read more.

Eichler plays to debut in NYC
MSW alumnus Michael Eichler is debuting two of his plays in New York City next month! To coincide with his play set in Pittsburgh, he and his production team are hosting an event for Pitt alumni on Friday, September 17. Find more information here: repulsingthemonkey.com
MSW alumna wins Chancellor's award
MSW alumna Medina Jackson: Director of Engagement, The P.R.I.D.E. Program, Office of Child Development won the Chancellor's Award for Community Engagement. Jackson was cited for her “remarkable work — both within her University of Pittsburgh role and outside of it — on behalf of Pittsburgh’s Black community. Read more.
MSW alumna gives back to NC State
MSW alumna Adama Washington and her husband Dewayne met as undergrads at NC State and have now the pair has made a $1 million commitment to benefit the Wolfpack athletics program and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Through a bequest and current-use gifts, they are giving back to two areas that have made profound impacts on their own lives. Read more.
Year of Data and Society Funding and Events
Please join the Year of Data and Society steering committee for events in September! In the next few weeks, we invite you to learn about the Year of Data and Society funding opportunity, attend the first session in a series of brown bags profiling innovative data projects at Pitt, and build awareness of how we can apply a race- and ethnicity-conscious lens to our data analysis and data visualization work. Pitt Enrich Tutoring Opportunities
PittEnrich is a community-engaged tutoring program designed to support 1st – 4th grade students from Homewood in reading and math. It is a partnership between the University of Pittsburgh Community Engagement Center in Homewood, School of Social Work and School of Education. Our tutors work with small groups of students both in schools and during Saturday programming to provide skill-based academic interventions. Tutors will undergo training to create individualized lesson plans and will receive support from an Instructional Coach.
 
Tutors are paid $10 an hour and training time is also compensated at this same rate.
