Student Spotlight

Three Florida Atlantic University Path To College Science Scholars took center stage as tomorrow's future leaders in a "TED Talk" inspired competition on June 4. FAU's Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College is proud to partner with Path to College to bring science to high school students and guide them on independent projects.

Kenneth Kalczuk, a Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College student at FAU, was accepted to the 2020 Hoover Institution's Public Policy Boot Camp. "Participating in this program will provide an invaluable experience for my future career," said Kalczuk. "I will have the opportunity to learn from former White House officials as well as acclaimed authors and scholars."

14 middle school students graduated as Jr. Neuroscientists on May 20, following their completion of the ASCEND (Advancing STEM-Community Engagement through Neuroscience Discovery) "NeuroExplorers" program. The kids participated in a semester-long neuroscience learning opportunity at STEM Studio in Jupiter for kids grades 6-8 made possible by the Florida Atlantic University Brain Institute, South Florida Science Center, and Stiles-Nicholson Foundation.

Laura Vernon, Ph.D., professor of psychology at the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College, provost fellow of student mental health, and founder of FAU Thrive, hosts Alexia Betances, a second year student in Social Work and founding member of FAU Keep Moving, an initiative that won the FAU Division of Research's COVID-19 Challenge. Alexia leads the mental health arm of Keep Moving and is an intern for FAU Thrive. Dr. Vernon and Alexia discuss Keep Moving and Alexia’s experiences of being bullied and the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and how these experiences motivate her to help others.
