Faculty Spotlights

Wilkes Honors College Assistant Professor of American Literature Dr. Sondra Bickham Washington was one of 25 scholars chosen by the National Endowment for the Humanities for an educational research collaboration hosted this summer by The Project on the History of Black Writing at the University of Kansas. She worked with top Zora Neale Hurston literary scholars from the U.S. and abroad, “engaging with Hurston’s work by participating in synchronous discussions, observing asynchronous presentations, and collaborating on research and teaching projects."

Dr. Washington also led a webinar for the National Humanities Center. The aim of Bickham Washington’s webinar was to inform educators, so they can “teach and contextualize various literature written by Southern Black women in order to present a more inclusive and representative survey of American literature."

Each fingertip has more than 3,000 touch receptors, which largely respond to pressure. Humans rely heavily on sensation in their fingertips when manipulating an object. The lack of this sensation presents a unique challenge for individuals with upper limb amputations. While there are several high-tech, dexterous prosthetics available today – they all lack the sensation of “touch.” The absence of this sensory feedback results in objects inadvertently being dropped or crushed by a prosthetic hand.
