VIRTUAL SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES! Opportunities are everywhere, and they are endless. You simply need to know where to find them, or how to look for them. The Adult Education Department at Chesapeake College is here to guide you as these opportunities arise!
This month you will learn about the Learning Circle Classes, tips for a successful job interview, and obtaining information on skilled trades classes.

Our Learning Circle Classes
Our classes never stop! If you want to register after the enrollment period has ended (Summer, Fall, Winter or Spring), you can still attend our ESL or ABE Learning Circle class. Students meet with a teacher individually once a week while working independently on our virtual learning programs: Burlington English for ESL, and Aztec Life & Work for ABE.

Career Pathways at Chesapeake College
Skilled Trades are careers in the trades industry. Classes run from 6 to 13 weeks and prepare you to take the industry-specific tests needed for certifications or licenses. Take the first steps toward your new career! 

  • Electrical Technician

  • Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Truck and Bus Driver
  • Heating, Ventilation, and Air Condition (HVAC) Technician

Job Interview Tips
These are recommendations from the Department of Labor, Division of Workforce, Development and Adult Learning:
Preparation: learn something about the company; have a specific job or jobs in mind; fill in your résumé; review your qualifications for the job; be prepared to answer questions about yourself; have ID’s, Social Security card, driver’s license, driving record, and special certifications handy.
Appearance: be well-groomed; be suitably dressed.
Interview: be prompt; answer questions directly and truthfully; be well-mannered; use proper grammar and good diction; be enthusiastic and cooperative; ask questions.

Students of the Month: Our Star Students
Ryan Stewart, Instructor: Sheila Palmer-Holland
Mr. Stewart has been an outstanding student; he attends classes regularly and completes assignments in a timely manner. Ryan’s perseverance in the program has proven success is possible. Mr. Stewart is an asset to the ABE program and continues to show progress.
Brandon Merida Saucedo, Instructors: Ceres Bainbridge and Judy Gordon
Brandon Merida-Saucedo lives with his uncle and works in construction. Brandon joined ESL class last fall. He is always on time and has near perfect attendance. He eagerly participates in reading aloud and answering questions. Brandon has advanced in his working knowledge of English and is a Star Student.

Brain Game: The "Twice As Much" Will
A will is read:
  • Bob received twice as much as Betty.
  • Brian received twice as much as Bob.
  • Bill received twice as much as Brian.
The estate is valued at $45,000, how much did each of the four heirs receive? (Hint: create a chart and write an algebra equation).
