The FAU Board of Trustees has selected Stacy Volnick as interim president of the university. She will begin her new role on Jan. 1, 2023, after President John Kelly steps down at the end of the calendar year. Her appointment was approved unanimously by the Florida Atlantic University Board of Trustees.
President Kelly will continue to serve as university president emeritus following his departure from his current role. He will focus his efforts on two roles that are important to him: On a personal level, his family, and on a professional level, steering FAU to the Carnegie R1 classification for “very high research activity.”... The prevalence, age of onset, and clinical symptoms for virtually all neuropsychiatric disorders differ between men and women. Among the disorders with pronounced sex bias are Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), where the ratio of males/females diagnosed is approximately 4 to 1. Whether this skewed ratio arises from roles played in brain development by sex-specific DNA sequences or hormones or reflects the way that biological mechanisms and environmental influences elicit behavioral patterns differently in males and females, remains an area of open investigation.
To better understand how dopamine levels at brain synapses are managed, neuroscientists from Florida Atlantic University, along with collaborators at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences, have now added a significant piece to this puzzle by establishing key differences in the molecular dopamine disposal machinery in the brains of male and female mice. ... The new International Max Planck Research School for Synapses and Circuits (IMPRS-SC) graduate program, a partnership between Max Planck Florida and FAU, held a three-day advanced technical course for Ph.D. students to learn electrophysiology, a technique to record the electrical activity of neurons. The course consisted of morning lectures to discuss theoretical concepts and afternoon hands-on guided experimental work. Led by experts in the field, students gained both practical experience and technical knowledge of electrophysiology while expanding their scientific networks. ... Read more.

Versatile and accomplished American writer, Joyce Carol Oates, has penned many books, bestselling novels, critically acclaimed collections of short fiction, as well as essays, plays, poetry, a memoir, “A Widow’s Story,” and an unlikely bestseller, “On Boxing.” She is the Roger S. Berlind Distinguished Professor of the Humanities at Princeton University, and since 1978, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
Best known for her fiction, Oates’ novels include "them," which won the National Book Award; "Blonde," a bold reimagining of the inner life of Marilyn Monroe; "The Falls," which won the France’s Prix Femina; and "We Were the Mulvaneys," which follows the disintegration of an American family and which become a bestseller after being selected by Oprah’s Book Club.

Researchers from FAU’s College of Engineering and Computer Science have received a three-year $478,699 grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for a project titled, “MAA Experiential Learning Opportunities for South Florida Underserved High School Students.”
FAU was one of eight institutions in the nation to be awarded NASA’s Minority University Research and Education (MUREP) award for the MUREP Aerospace Academy (MAA). Florida Atlantic University Schools (FAUS) recently was awarded the Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education Program Grant to increase the number of students from underserved groups, including students with disabilities, who apply for and are accepted to FAUS.
The grant, awarded through the U.S. Department of Education, is worth $3.1 million over five years and will serve to identify, recruit and develop underserved students for FAUS.
It also will go toward Supporting Talent through Recruitment, Inclusion, Diversity and Equity (STRIDE), which will serve 825 unduplicated underserved high school students, 75 middle and 180 elementary students, as well as 145 teachers over the five-year grant period. ... Read more.
