Closure of non-essential construction in Ontario leads to May job losses
Canada’s construction industry shed 15,900 jobs in May, with public health restrictions in Ontario putting a halt to many non-essential construction projects largely to blame for the decline, Statistics Canada said June 4.
The federal agency’s latest Labour Force Survey shows the industry’s workforce dropped to 1.439 million last month, down just over one per cent from April.
The job losses in construction outpaced job losses in the wider Canadian economy. Across all industries, employment slipped 0.4 per cent.

Canadian building permits remained at high levels in April
Statistics Canada reports the total value of building permits remained at historically high levels in April 2021, edging down 0.5% to $11.1 billion, following the record set in March. The slight pullback was mainly due to declines in the residential sector in British Columbia and Quebec, which outweighed national gains in the non-residential sector.
On a constant dollar basis (2012=100), building permits were largely unchanged (-0.0%).
Commercial permits surged 28.7% to $1.9 billion in April.
