Lakehill Celebrates Black History Month
During the aftermath of the Civil War in 1865, the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution abolished slavery. The 13th Amendment states: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”

Black History Month is an annual celebration in the United States and around the world to recognize not only the achievements by African Americans, but also recognizing the vital role they played in U.S. history. It wasn’t until half a century after the 13th Amendment abolished slavery that Black History Month started. In 1915, led by a Harvard historian, an organization began researching and celebrating Black Americans.

During the month of February, students of all ages at Lakehill are taking part in the celebrations of Black History Month.
Spanish Classes Dance into Black History Month
Invitación para practicar la Salsa

Mr. Thomas Cantu, Lower and Middle School Spanish teacher, invites you to practice your salsa dancing. This week, in conjunction with Black History Month, Mr. Cantu spent the last ten minutes of each Spanish class teaching his students how to salsa. He also introduced his students to the Queen of Salsa, Celia Cruz. A Cuban born, African American woman, Celia Cruz came to New York City in the 1960s and took over the salsa scene. Join the fun at home and check out Mr. Cantu's tutorial below!

"During a career that lasted more than 60 years, Celia Cruz helped popularize salsa music in the United States. By celebrating her Cuban culture, she also helped Afro-Latino Americans embrace their own heritage." Please enjoy the following story about Celia Cruz.
Poster Club's Expression in Art
During the month of February, the Poster Club will be focusing on modern day Black History Month figures. Last year, they focused on traditional figures and they are excited about this new modern day view of Black Americans. Each piece of art will contain a QR code in the bottom right hand corner so you can learn more. Click on the QR code and check out what the Poster Club has created.

Be on the lookout, there are more posters being released this month!

Sharing Out the Positives
At Lakehill, we believe every student needs a strong foundation of relationships to achieve academic and personal excellence. Our teachers are dedicated to building those relationships and providing the opportunities our students need. The success of our graduates is proof that what we are doing is working.

This year has been very different from any other and honestly, quite challenging with the protocols on campus in addition to online learning. Through all of the challenges and uncharted territory, our teachers have continued to be invested in each and every student and have found some positive aspects that have come out of all of this.

Justin Vlier
by: Brityn Shaw

Justin Vlier has attended Lakehill since the sixth grade. He has been a member of the Lakehill Chorale and the varsity tennis team.  He also enjoys playing tennis recreationally outside of school. History is Justin’s favorite subject and since freshman year, he has chosen to take Dr. Solonick’s history classes and electives. Favorite Lakehill memories include Middle School Adventure Week and the Upper School biology trip.  Justin has applied to The University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Michigan, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Baylor University and plans to major in Economics. Justin’s advice to young warriors about high school is “ have a good work ethic, but don’t take things too seriously.”
William Leake
by Sierra Gadsden

William Leake, known around campus as Billy, has attended Lakehill since the ninth grade. He has participated in varsity soccer, varsity track, varsity baseball, and varsity football. William is a member of the National Honor Society, French Club, and was vice president of his class junior year.

During the summer, William works as a camp counselor at Camp Longhorn. He has been involved with Camp Longhorn for ten years.

Athletics has been a vital part of William’s memories during his time at Lakehill. Some of his favorites include making it to the State Championship game in football his junior season, winning the State Championship his senior season, and eating pizza with Coach R.C. after baseball practice his sophomore year. His athletic honors include First Team All-District and Second Team All-State in football. William’s favorite class at Lakehill is anything taught by Dr. Solonick because of how fun and interesting he makes his classes.

William plans to attend Texas Christian University. His advice to younger Warriors is, “Have fun at school with your friends and do whatever it takes to make school fun.”
Lakehill-opoly
Wondering about the spring auction? The spring auction event is typically the largest fundraiser of the year for Lakehill's Parent Faculty Club; however, this year we need to do things a bit differently!

Large crowds and dressing up are OUT – playing games with your family in sweats is IN. We have come up with a great alternative way to raise funds for the school - a customized Lakehill-opoly board game!

The Lakehill-opoly board game will be a fabulous keepsake, celebrating the unique people and places that make up our community at Lakehill Preparatory School. Stay tuned for ways to get your hands on this first-ever Lakehill item.

Want to get in on the action early? Email us at lakehillopoly@gmail.com to find out how you can feature your family or business on the Lakehill-opoly game.
The Love Lab
3rd Grade
Yesterday morning, the Love Lab was a big hit with third graders in the cafeteria. Students came in and dressed up in a lab coat, goggles, and gloves before beginning their experiments.

The Skittle rainbow was first on the list of procedures. Students arranged Skittles in a circle on the edge of a paper plate. Then they slowly poured water in the center of the plate until the water touched the Skittles. The colors began to disperse and a rainbow was formed!

Mrs. Rasheed and Mrs. Curtis then guided the students through mixing a calming bath salt to take home for the students' families to enjoy.

The grand finale, Elephant Toothpaste, consisted of a chemical reaction that caused a small bubble explosion to come out of an empty water bottle. The ohs and ahs were heard from around the Lower School!

Valentine's "Breakout"

Second Grade students in Mrs. Pike's computer class completed a valentine's "breakout" digital puzzle. Students went through a series of locks and puzzles that had to be solved in a set amount of time. If you beat the time, you breakout! "Breakout games foster critical thinking, collaboration among classmates, and creativity," said Mrs. Pike. "But most importantly, students love them!"
NHS CCC Donation Drive

Upper School is working with White Rock Center of Hope for a Clothes, Cans, and Cloth Drive. To donate, students should bring items into school and place them in the proper donation bin. There are three donation locations: the Lower School entrance, the Middle School entrance, and the Main Entrance by the front desk. One box will be for clothes, linens, and coats, and the other box will be for canned items. For a specific list of needs, please click the button below.
Varsity Soccer

For the first time in program history, the Lakehill Warrior Varsity Soccer team has clinched a spot in the playoffs.
Jenny Livengood was the first person to come to Athletic Director Bob Yttredahl’s mind when the Varsity Soccer team clinched a playoff spot for the first time in program history. Coach Livengood was once a 3rd grade teacher and JV volleyball coach at Lakehill. Her true passion was always found in soccer.

“She kept trying to convince me to start up a soccer program for Lakehill,” said Coach Yttredahl. “She has a true passion for the sport and wanted to share that with our kids.”
When the decision was made that it was time to start a school soccer program, it was offered to middle school athletes for the first two years. Once that was established, a varsity team followed. “I realized pretty quickly how popular soccer was going to be. It just goes back to one of our core values of providing opportunities for our students to excel. I am so proud of the athletes, Coach Bracken, and Coach Diego. They have worked so hard over the past several years to get to this point.”

The Warriors will take on Waco Vanguard in the first round of the playoffs. Join us in cheering on the Warrior Soccer team through our TAPPSTV channel. Go Warriors!
