Welcome back for the fall semester, Owls! I hope you had a wonderful summer and are ready to begin a new and exciting academic year at FAU.
For students attending classes for the first time this week, we have many systems in place to help you succeed. Around campus, look for faculty and staff wearing “Need Help? Just Ask” lanyards who can assist you with any questions. Additional information can be found on the MyFAU app, where you can conveniently access campus maps, your university email, Canvas and more.
Although I will be stepping down from my role as president in December, I am excited to make the most of the coming months with you. Being part of the FAU community for the past eight-plus years has been an absolute pleasure and I thank you for contributing to the university’s success. We have much to look forward to as we embrace another year of Learning in Paradise, and I encourage you to stop and say “hello” when you see me around campus.

Four Wilkes Honors College students recently took part in the FAU Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine's annual White Coat Ceremony. The ceremony is a symbolic rite of passage. In the presence of family and guests, new medical students are welcomed into the community by leaders of the College of Medicine, where they are ceremonially cloaked with doctors’ white coats. Jaqueline Fewkes, Ph.D., professor of Anthropology, Wilkes Honors College (WHC), recently traveled to Leh town in Ladakh – a region in the northern-most part of Himalayan India – to continue her research work in the area.
"My experience of living in Leh town and working with this community for almost 30 years now has allowed me to witness a great deal of socio-cultural change in the area," Fewkes said. "As Leh has gone through many economic and political transformations – including transitioning from being a popular international tourist destination to a major domestic one, and becoming a union territory in India – the town's public spaces have been renovated and refashioned to reflect new civic interests and needs," she said.
Fewkes' work this summer consisted of photographing public spaces to document their changes in recent years, and talking with residents to hear more about how those changes are perceived by those living in Ladakh. ... Learn more.

A newly-discovered walking shark that breaks all of the rules for survival is the focus of a first-of-its-kind study by FAU and collaborators in Australia. Researchers investigated how walking and swimming changes in the epaulette shark’s (Hemiscyllium ocellatum) early development. This small (about 3 feet), reef-dwelling, benthic shark walks both in and out of water by wriggling its body and pushing with its paddle-shaped fins.
Found within the reef flats around Australia’s southern Great Barrier Reef, epaulette sharks experience short periods of elevated CO2 and hypoxia (low oxygen) as well as fluctuating temperatures as reef flats become isolated with the outgoing tide. Remarkably, this walking shark is capable of surviving complete anoxia (no oxygen) for two hours without adverse effects, and at a much higher temperature than most other hypoxia-tolerant animals. … Read more.

A recent report by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found more than 80 percent of urine samples from children and adults in the U.S. contained the herbicide glyphosate. A study by FAU and Nova Southeastern University takes this research one step further and is the first to link the use of the herbicide Roundup®, a widely used weed killer, to convulsions in animals.
Glyphosate, the weed killer component in Roundup®, is the world’s most commonly used herbicide by volume and by land-area treated. Glyphosate-resistant crops account for almost 80 percent of transgenic crop cultivated land, which has resulted in an estimated 6.1 billion kilos of glyphosate sprayed across the world from 2005 to 2014. Roundup® is used at both industrial and consumer levels, and its use is projected to dramatically increase over the coming years. A major question, yet to be fully understood, is the potential impact of glyphosate on the nervous system. … Read more.

So what has America learned since Hurricane Katrina? Not enough, according to a first-of-its-kind study by FAU, which reveals only marginal improvements with respect to evacuation planning in America’s 50 largest cities. Researchers found a lack of preparedness, specifically to evacuate carless and vulnerable populations.
“While it is promising that more cities are developing evacuation plans, overall, it remains disheartening that not every city was able to learn the lessons of not being prepared, especially for carless and vulnerable populations, as showcased to the nation during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005,” said John L. Renne, Ph.D., senior author and professor and director, Center for Urban & Environmental Solutions (CUES) in FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, who conducted the study with co-author Estefania Mayorga, a graduate of the master’s program in Urban and Regional Planning at FAU. ... Read more.
