Construction of RH3 on the Jupiter Campus is underway. Fencing around the structure and other safety precautions remain in place. Florida Atlantic University’s Florida Center for Environmental Studies is celebrating Arbor Day virtually this year during a webinar on Friday, April 24, at 4 p.m. after hosting Arbor Day on FAU’s John D. MacArthur Campus at Jupiter in the Robert J. Huckshorn Arboretum for more than a decade. During the webinar, several local tree experts will share the best native trees to plant, tips for tree care and maintenance and what one local community is doing to encourage tree plantings. Webinar participants will have the opportunity to participate in a live Q&A session with the featured speakers.

Cancer can be unpredictable. That’s why Gregg Fields, Ph.D., is researching how bone cells are tricked into allowing some types of cancer to invade the skeleton and rapidly take over. For example, multiple myeloma and breast cancer cells are known to penetrate bone tissue and metastasize. “We have discovered therapeutic compounds that we know can slow down or stop metastasis in bone from these cancers,” said Fields, the executive director of FAU’s Institute for Human Health and Disease Intervention (I-HEALTH) and professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. “But mechanisms of these therapies are not well understood.”... James Jaggard, a graduate student working in the Keene Laboratory was awarded a National Institutes of Health (NIH) T32 Fellowship to compete his postdoctoral training at Stanford University, where he will continue investigating sleep. He also successfully defended his Ph.D. on Thursday. Congratulations.

Laura Vernon, Ph.D., professor of psychology at the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College and provost fellow of student mental health, and Jenny Bloom, Ph.D., professor of higher education leadership and provost fellow for leadership and professional development, host Kimberly Dunn, associate professor of Accounting in the College of Business and Executive Director of Champions Empowering Champions, an organization dedicated to empowering college students who have experienced foster care or homelessness to achieve lifelong success. Florida Atlantic University’s Brain Institute ASCEND (Advancing STEM: Community Engagement through Neuroscience Discovery) Program is an innovative education platform targeting middle and high school students in Palm Beach County. During these unprecedented times, the ASCEND team is eager to boost its virtual education content to ignite curiosity about brain science. ASCEND released the following Brain Bites podcast to talk about physical senses such as Sight, Touch and Hearing.
