New Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs for FAU Jupiter Campus

Florida Atlantic University named Robert W. Stackman, Jr., Ph.D., the new associate vice president for academic affairs for FAU's John D. MacArthur Campus. In this position, Stackman will be responsible for the management of all academic operations FAU Jupiter. In addition to his strategic oversight of degree planning and enrollment growth, he will also lead the rapidly-developing research enterprise in coordination with FAU’s Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute, Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience and UF Scripps Biomedical Research.

Stackman will concurrently serve as the dean of FAU's Graduate College, which provides current graduate students with support through professional development initiatives and advice regarding policies related to thesis and dissertation preparation and submission. Stackman has a background as an accomplished neuroscientist with a research lab in Jupiter that investigates the role of brain circuits and cellular mechanisms in the development of long-term memory.

The FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute is requesting applications for the 2022-2023 Pilot Grant Program supporting research in neurodegenerative disease research, computational brain science and health and general neuroscience. FAU-MPFI Partner Programs

Students participating in the John Nambu Memorial Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates Program and the National Science Foundation Summer Integrative Neuroscience Experience programs recently presented their research at the 2022 Summer REU (research experience for undergraduates) Poster Symposium. Hosted at FAU Jupiter, the event featured 16 research presentations highlighting research conducted during the summer programs. Program partners, staff, faculty and peers were all in attendance.

The 2022 cohort is comprised of students visiting from universities across the nation and Puerto Rico, as well as local students from FAU, Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience and UF Scripps Biomedical Research.

Undergraduate students participating in the John Nambu Memorial Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates Program and the National Science Foundation Summer Integrative Neuroscience Experience, led by Rod Murphey, Ph.D., professor of biological sciences, and Bethany Stanhope, Ph.D., executive director of academic operations, FAU Jupiter, toured the world-renowned Electron Microscopy Core and Machine Shop at the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience (MPFI).

Meet Warren Yee, Wilkes Honors College (WHC) class of 2023. Yee received the 2022 WHC Medallion Award for Outstanding Junior. His focus at the Honors College is interdisciplinary math. This summer, he is taking his studies to Madrid, Spain through the WHC studying abroad experience.

Outside of academic adventures, Yee said he enjoys attending club events, traveling, drawing, video games, and spending time with family. ... Read more.
Meet WHC student, Maya Clarke, class of 2025. Clarke's current track of studies is in environmental studies. Clarke received the WHC Medallion Award for Outstanding First Year Student in 2022.

Clarke had the unique experience of growing up on a sailboat with her family, completing one trans-Pacific and two trans-Atlantic passages, traveling 26,000 nautical miles, visiting 24 countries. When Clarke is not attending classes and studying, she said she enjoys walking her dog at Juno beach, thrift shopping, and attending club events on campus. ... Read more.
Meet Amparo Godoy Pastore, WHC student, class of 2024. Pastore is currently concentrating her studies in interdisciplinary mathematics with an emphasis in computer science and a minor in Spanish. One of her favorite classes was Honors Latin American Literature: Mid to Post Boom, because of the opportunity to write a research article on a short story by one of her favorite authors, Julio Cortázar.

Pastore said her hobbies include reading, going to coffee shops and bookstores, weight training, going to the beach and having “merienda” (afternoon snack) with friends. ... Read more.
Campus Community
The "Next Chapter Book Club," hosted by FAU John D. MacArthur Campus Library, is making a real difference in the lives of college students with intellectual disabilities. Led by FAU Jupiter Library director Leah Plocharczyk, the club is a collaboration with FAU’s Academy for Community Inclusion and the Department of Exceptional Education.  

The club is an optional part of the post-secondary education program that allows these students to have a typical college experience, teaches them how to advocate for themselves, and seek employment opportunities post-graduation. ... Learn more.

Carmen Cañete Quesada, WHC associate professor of Spanish, and a group of 14 WHC students are traveling to Spain this summer as part of a study abroad program. They will experience Spain’s capital city and surrounding areas through tours, museums and cultural activities while learning about the political and social impact of the Spanish Civil War in a European setting. ... Summer Mentorship Opportunity for FAU ACI Students and Jupiter Campus Faculty

During summer semesters, students enrolled in FAU’s Academy for Community Inclusion are provided the opportunity to connect in a one-on-one setting with University faculty and staff. These mentor relationships provide opportunities for ACI students to continue developing skills related to employment, independent living, and self-determination.

Each mentor/mentee relationship is unique ... some pairs chat over lunch, while others play basketball and write poetry together. Recent mentors including participants from WHC, College of Arts & Letters, College of Education, Office of Information Technology, and FAU Libraries

The Florida Atlantic University Foundation (FAUF) raised more than $81.24 million from more than 5,332 donors at the end of the 2022 fiscal year – the largest amount raised in the University’s history. This total breaks the record of $57 million from the previous year and demonstrates a continued trajectory for growth.

Research from the Safety Net Hospital Alliance of Florida and the Florida Hospital Association estimates that Florida will be short 17,924 physicians by the year 2035. 

More than a decade ago, Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt College of Medicine and Baptist Health South Florida’s Bethesda Hospital and Boca Raton Regional Hospital, and Tenet Health’s Delray Medical Center, St. Mary’s Medical Center and West Boca Medical Center, signed an agreement to form the FAU Schmidt College of Medicine Graduate Medical Education Consortium (FAU GME). Their initial goal was to ensure that the region will have an adequate and well-trained physician workforce by establishing residency programs in specialties that would serve their communities. ...
