MEETING MAYRA
From Drew Vogt, CdK President
March, Vol.12, 2021
Sharing student stories with you gives an inside view to their world. Their courage is truly inspiring. I am consistently impressed by their persistence in the face of obstacles and challenges. Without exception, the lives of our 28 students were made difficult because of circumstances into which they were born; circumstances that they didn't create. Some of these we can share delicately, and others are too private to share publicly.
Today it's my pleasure to present a brief interview my associate, Pamela Vazquez, conducted with Mayra, who's been in our program for almost 2 years. She's an only child, living with her mom who is in poor health. They live in a corrugated tin house about 15 minutes from thriving Oaxaca. Mayra is becoming an elementary school teacher, and her part time job helps pay for her basic expenses.
Stimulus Checks? Some donors have been inspired to donate a portion of their stimulus checks to Casa de Kids. Of course this would be wonderful, but only if it's practical. During these challenging times we know that many people need to use their funds for their basic expenses for "home and hearth". So please use the funds where it is practical, and if you also feel inspired to donate to Casa de Kids' life-changing work we thank you in advance.

Why Oaxaca?
Oaxaca City is the capital of the state of Oaxaca (pronounced wah-ha-kah). While our state is famous for native and culinary arts, it ranks as the country's third poorest and has one of the highest illiteracy rates. Its mountainous terrain makes commerce and education difficult, attracting many seeking a better life to Oaxaca City.
MISSION
To empower disadvantaged youth with education and life skills, enabling them to break cycles of poverty.
VISION
A world where youth are treated with respect and empowered through education, thriving in equality, integrity and freedom, creating the life of their dreams, while giving back to their community.
