Celebrating Our Senior Nutrition Program
March 2021
Funded by the Older Americans Act, the National Senior Nutrition Program began in 1972 and has been meeting the nutritional, social, and wellness needs of Older Americans for nearly 50 years. Each March, we recognize its anniversary by celebrating the program's rich history and tremendous value across the nation.

Delaware's Senior Nutrition Programs
The Division of Services for Aging and Adults with Physical Disabilities contracts with several providers throughout Delaware for both the Home-Delivered Meal program and the Congregate Meal Program.
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Delaware's meal providers have done a tremendous job adapting their delivery model. Safety protocols, meal adaptation, extra meals and more were rapidly implemented in order to serve the seniors in Delaware. Participant numbers have grown throughout the pandemic and to date, over ONE MILLION meals have been provided.
Please see information on each provider below.

City Fare Meals on Wheels, a program of Saint Anthony’s Community Center, has operated in Wilmington since 1986. We provide hot, nourishing meals to homebound elderly and disabled persons in New Castle County who are unable to prepare meals for themselves and who have no one to do so for them. We also provide professional case management to every client. The meals, daily contact by caring volunteers, and staff who coordinate other services as needed allow frail, otherwise forgotten, homebound persons to remain living independently in their own homes.

COVID-19 Meal Adaptations:
Grab and Go style items have been offered since March 2020 .. Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to noon. Clients call ahead by 9:30 a.m. the day of receiving to reserve a meal. The Modern Maturity Center (MMC) has moved the Grab and Go style meal pickup location from the rear entrance to the front entrance in order to reduce congestion. It has been a great success and MMC is being asked by clients to continue this program because some users are working under COVID restrictions and this allows them to pick up a hot nutritious meal quickly.
Home-Delivered meals has continued with COVID-19 pre-cautions put in place.

The Senior Nutrition Programs Need Volunteers!!!
Our volunteers are mission critical to our success as they provide a variety of services to our clients, ranging from regular meal delivery to fundraising event coordination. Without their daily support, we would not be able to provide the level of service to those who need it most in our local communities. Are you interested in becoming a volunteer? We would love to have you on the team!

Eating Healthy When You Are A Caregiver On The Go
Caregivers lead very busy lives. While caring for the needs of a senior loved one, caregivers frequently work full- or part-time and have children of their own. It’s a juggling act that often requires setting priorities so everything that needs to be done in a day is accomplished.
When the schedule is hectic, one thing that is frequently sacrificed is a healthy diet. A caregiver might rely on convenience foods or a trip to the drive through window at a local fast food restaurant. While that may make life a little easier, an unhealthy diet can take a toll on a caregiver’s health.

More Tips for Healthy Eating On The Go
Batch cooking, smoothies, and lots of planning pay off when you're in a hurry.
We're all busy, and sometimes that can lead to poor choices when we're hungry. "Many people turn to prepackaged convenience foods, which can be lacking in nutrients and laden with fat, sodium, and calories," says Dr. Michelle Hauser, a clinical fellow in medicine at Harvard Medical School and a certified chef and nutrition educator.
But you don't have to sacrifice nutrition when you're on the go. Try these tips to keep meals and snacks healthy when you're in a hurry.
