New state report references Just Discipline findings
The work of Dr. James Huguley's Just Discipline Project is referenced in the new report from the Pennsylvania Advisory Committee
to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights-Disparate and Punitive Impact of Exclusionary Practices
on Students of Color, Students with Disabilities and LGBTQ Students in Pennsylvania Public Schools. His section is entitled: "Understanding and Dismantling the School to Prison Pipeline: Evidence from Greater Pittsburgh" and can be found on page 122. Read more.
Attracting Black faculty also means changing negative perceptions of Pittsburgh
The task of attracting more Black faculty to the University of Pittsburgh creates its own set of challenges, but John Wallace, School of Social Work Epperson Chair and vice provost for Faculty Diversity and Development, says he is dedicated to helping change negative perceptions of Pittsburgh and encouraging Black people to live in the city. An Emerging Public Health Crisis
The current coronavirus pandemic isn’t the only public health crisis afoot, according to Daniel Jacobson López, School of Social Work doctoral alumnus and a postdoctoral associate in Pitt’s Graduate School of Public Health.

López says more than half of all gay and bisexual men will be sexually assaulted in their lifetimes. And for Black or Latino men, the scenario worsens—because they are frequently afraid to report the abuse and, if they do so, are often ignored or not given the resources they need. Alumna wins Unsung Heroes Award
MSW alumna Saly J. Fayez, Director, Fairfax County Police Department Victim Services Division, was named one of the Unsung Heroes Award winners. The Unsung Heroes Awards honor Virginians who have dedicated themselves to serving victims and fighting for their rights. Read more.
‘This is a crisis’: Panel discusses support for gay Black and Latino male sexual assault survivors
Soon-to-be doctoral graduate Craig Sewall, along with Danny Rosen and Tina Goldstein (Pitt Department of Psychiatry), published an article in Journal of Affective Disorders entitled "Objectively measured digital technology use during the COVID-19 pandemic: Impact on depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation among young adults."
