Ohmer leads conversation on violence reduction


West End P.O.W.E.R.and the The H.O.O.P. Alliance are partnering with the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work to prevent community and youth violence and promote community wellbeing in the West Side city of Pittsburgh neighborhoods and in the 15104-zip code (Braddock, North Braddock, and Rankin) area.


The intervention was developed by Dr. Mary Ohmer and has also been implemented in Atlanta, GA and in the Perry Hilltop and Fineview neighborhoods in Pittsburgh.

New report looks at Trans and Gender Diverse Students’ Perspectives on Campus Climate and Sexual Violence


A new report "Trans and Gender Diverse Students’ Perspectives on Campus Climate and Sexual Violence: Report and Recommendations" authored by Rachel E. Gartner, MSW, PhD, Adrian J. Ballard, MSW, LCSW, Emil Smith, MSW, LCSW, Lauren R. Risser, MPH, CHES, Carla D. Chugani, PhD, LPC, and Elizabeth Miller, MD, PhD was recently released.


The overarching purpose of this report is to present the findings of a 2-year, multi-faceted study on the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) to identify needs and propose action steps to improve sexual violence (SV) and broader campus climate for transgender and gender diverse (TGD) students. Read full report here.

Two more PhD students honored with CCRRJ Student Scholar Awards


Doctoral students Amanda Cruce and Sommer Blair were selected as part of the inaugural cohort of Student Scholars for the Center for Civil Rights and Racial Justice. Amanda will use these funds to examine the intersectionality of minority youth in the child welfare system and how federal laws either support or oppress them. 

BASW Student wins poster award


BASW student Priya Gupta won the Health Disparities Poster Award Competition for her work on the Stier Award pilot project on mobile crisis. Her poster was titled: "Assessing bias in mobile crisis intervention: An experimental pilot study." She is pictured here with faculty member and project lead Dr. Leah Jacobs.
