‘Free Grad School’ campaignunveiled for upcoming year |
The School of Art will implement a “Free Graduate School” program in fall 2023 to help reduce financial stress as our incoming MFA and Ph.D. students pursue their passions. The program covers all base tuition costs, plus an annual stipend. Through Graduate Assistantships and other forms of aid, students will be guaranteed three years of full funding. Learn more |

Renovation project puts
school front and center |
A major renovation project, thanks to a generous donation, has "increased the visibility of our work in critical ways," Director Colin Blakely said. The first phase, finished in March, created open, communal spaces around the entrance to the school and brought the Lionel Rombach Gallery front and center to better showcase student work. Regents Professor Alshaibi
earns more honors |
Not only was Sama Alshaibi named a prestigious Regents Professor in 2022, but she received the Arlene and Morton Scult Artist Award in Scottsdale, where her exhibition “Generation After Generation” is running through May 2023. Alshaibi's photographs also were part of the "Intimacy of Distance" exhibition in Santa Monica, and the 2021 Guggenheim Fellow was featured in a Hyperallergic review, "Freedom in Body and Water." |

Lipp wins outstanding senior
awards from school, college |
Amanda Lipp, an Art History major, has been named the Outstanding Senior for fall 2022 by the entire College of Fine Arts and the School of Art. The undergrad student, who minored in Art and Visual Culture Education, earned accolades for her research into the Mexican talavera jar and the history of all-women art exhibitions. "This is the kind of research practice we expect of our grad students," Professor Stacie Widdifield said. Read story |

Graduating senior Erika Tenorio, who hails from three indigenous cultures, read the Land Acknowledgement on Nov. 15 at the Pima County Board of Supervisors Meeting. Tenorio, a double major in Studio Art Illustration and Latin American Studies, is honoring her heritage and grandmother with her art. Read story. Smithsonian recognizes
Cherise Smith for book |
Dr. Cherise Smith (MA ‘97/BA ‘91, Art History) received the Eldredge Prize for Distinguished Scholarship in American Art by the Smithsonian American Art Museum for her book “Michael Ray Charles: A Retrospective.” Smith is a professor in the African and African Diaspora Studies and art and art history departments at the University of Texas at Austin. Dorsey Kaufmann (BFA, ’20, Illustration + Design) presented her interactive sound installation about water contamination, “Ripple Effect,” to Venice, Italy, in June at the ACM Conference on Creativity and Cognition.
