We kicked off the summer at Tri-C's 45th Annual JazzFest, followed by our annual Celebration Awards Breakfast. Read about these events and more in our quarterly newsletter. It's written specifically for you – our Elected Officials and Community Partners – to share college news-of-note as well as resources that may be of use to you and your constituents. Highlights in our July 2024 issue include:

Community Colleges Adapt to Fill Workforce Needs
In a June 10 Op-Ed in Crain’s Cleveland Business, Tri-C President Michael A. Baston, J.D., Ed.D., addressed the ongoing challenges facing local businesses and how Tri-C is adapting to help them face those challenges.

“We are at a moment where businesses and Tri-C can modernize Northeast Ohio’s workforce and drive economic growth,” he writes. “It’s time to meet that moment together.” More

Mellon Foundation Extends Support for Humanities Students with Nearly $3 Million Grant

Launched in 2015, the Cleveland Humanities Collaborative sought to build on the academic work of high-performing humanities students at Tri-C by providing support services and learning opportunities as they transitioned into — and completed — bachelor's degree programs at Case Western Reserve University.

Nine years later, the Mellon Foundation is providing nearly $3 million in additional support to CWRU and Tri-C for the program, which now includes students and faculty from Lakeland Community College and Lorain County Community College. Details
Good News Conversation Starters
Tri-C Graduate Heading to the Olympics Morelle McCane, a boxer and Tri-C graduate, is heading to Paris for the Summer Olympics. “Tri-C opened my eyes to what is possible,” the 2017 grad noted. McCane's silver medal in the 2023 Pan American Games in Chile clinched her spot in the 2024 Olympics. Learn more here.

Annually, the Tri-C Community Champion awards acknowledge those supporting Tri-C and/or its scholars through an amazing demonstration of ingenuity and community spirit. Claire Rosacco, Vice President of Government Relations & Community Outreach, presided over these awards.

2024 Distinguished & Rising Star Alumni
This year's Seventh Annual Alumni Awards, conferred by Tri-C Foundation President Megan O'Bryan, went to three honorees at the Community Celebration:

  • The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes accomplished professionals with notable achievements and service to the community more than 10 years after completing their studies. This year's honorees:
  • Distinguished Alumni Wayne Dawson He enrolled in Tri-C to prepare for a career in journalism and is now "one of the most beloved broadcasters in Ohio TV history" as well as a staunch supporter of Tri-C and its programs.
  • Distinguished Alumni Dr. Lisa Williams – Awarded to the retiring Tri-C West Campus President for her outstanding education career and acknowledging a full-circle moment from Tri-C grad to retiree and celebrated honoree.

  • The Rising Star Alumni Award is presented to more recent alumni who are making a difference. This year's honor went to:
  • Rising Star Aba Paintsil – A nursing graduate with two Tri-C degrees and working towards her Master of Science in nursing, she still finds time to help tutor Tri-C students.

Tri-C Announces Daymond John as 2024 Speaker
Since 1992, the Tri-C Presidential Scholarship Luncheon (PSL) has raised more than $24 million to help students with financial needs pursue higher education. On Thursday, Sept. 5, 2024, join our annual event to hear John, an author and CEO/Founder of FUBU, a global apparel company with billions in sales. You also may recognize him from 15 seasons on ABC’s Shark Tank – the ultimate entrepreneur TV show.
Workforce Programs
The national award – the highest offered by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) – is given annually to respiratory therapy programs at which more than 90% of graduates pass their board exams. The award is considered one of the primary indicators of a successful respiratory therapy program. Tri-C has won the CoARC award for the third time in four years. More

Serving Our Veterans – a Tri-C Priority
Tri-C Earns 15th Consecutive Military Friendly® School Designation
The College attained Gold status in the ratings for its work with veterans and military members. Tri-C works with hundreds of military families each year through its veteran service centers. Of note – only 289 of the more than 1,800 eligible schools received the Military Friendly designation. More

Opened in 1963, Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) is Ohio's first community college and remains one of the state's largest community colleges. To date, more than 1,000,000 students have come through Tri-C's doors.

The college offers two-year associate degrees, certificate programs, and the first two years of a baccalaureate degree. The curriculum includes over 1,000 credit courses in more than 200 career, certificate and university transfer programs. Courses are offered at four campus locations, two Corporate College facilities, many off-campus sites, and via television and internet.
