Three South Florida counties that collectively are home to the largest metropolitan population in the state will soon have access to an academic health network that is a collaboration of the region’s leading public and private academic and medical leaders.
“This partnership marks the beginning of a transformative health network for our region,” said Brad Levine, chair of the FAU Board of Trustees. “I am thrilled to see all our partners come together to meet these vitally important needs. The time is now because the need is now.”

FAU student Bernard Harrigan was named a 2022 Udall Scholar, marking the first time in the university’s history that one of its students was presented with this scholarship.

WHC Names New Associate Dean of Student Affairs |

Wilkes Honors College Dean Justin Perry recently appointed Rachel Luria, MFA, associate professor of Rhetoric and Composition, to associate dean of Student Affairs.
"Professor Luria has done an outstanding job in an acting capacity over the last year, bringing new energy and innovation to her role and to the operations of the college," Perry said. "I am confident that she will continue to help us take the mission of the Honors College to new heights as we enter a post-pandemic world."

SPAIN: Lucia Carvelli, Ph.D., associate professor of neuroscience, recently spoke at Gordon Research Conference's 2022 Membrane Transport Proteins, "Biomedical Transporters: Physiology, Dysfunction and Targets of Pharmacotherapy" conference in Barcelona, Spain. Carvelli's presented, "Remembering the Past to Prepare for the Future: the Long-Term and Inherited Effects of Amphetamine at the Monoamine Transporters."
DENMARK: Randy Blakely, Ph.D., executive director, was a keynote speaker at the 2nd International Transmembrane Transporter Society (ITTS) Meeting, “Catching Transport in Motion,” in Copenhagen, Denmark. Blakely's presentation was titled, "Presynaptic Choline Transporters: From Gene to Mouse to Disease.” Additionally, Felix P. Mayer, Ph.D., postdoctoral fellow, gave a presentation titled, "Dopamine Transporters Out of Control: Disrupted Regulation of Dopamine Clearance and a Potential Remedy via Manipulation of Opioid Signaling."
CANADA: Mayer also joined Adele Stewart, Ph.D., research assistant professor of biomedical science, at the first Dopamine Society meeting, Dopamine 2022, that took place in Montreal. Mayer presented "Sex and the Circuitry: Dopamine Transporter Regulation In Vivo." Stewart presented on both "Guys and Dolls: Sex Effects in Dopamine Genetics, Circuits and Drug Action," and "Sexually Dimorphic Dopamine Signaling Dictates the Penetrance and Behavioral Trajectory of Human Dopamine Transporter Coding Variation."

Meet Samantha Zaninelli, Wilkes Honors College (WHC), class of 2023. Zaninelli has a concentration in behavioral neuroscience and a minor in data science. She was recently named a 2022 Goldwater Scholar, one of only two students to receive this scholarship in FAU history.
Zaninelli is currently doing research in the lab of Erik Duboue, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology, investigating the evolutionary basis of sensory-motor integration through CRISPR/Cas 9, utilizing the Astyanax mexicanus species. Congratulations to FAU's 2022 3MT Championship Winners |
More than 30 graduate students submitted a three-minute video to "pitch" their research in this year's internationally-recognized Three Minute Thesis Competition (3MT) hosted by the Graduate College. As a result of preliminary round scoring, 13 graduate students advanced to the championship.
FAU's annual 3MT competition is now in its sixth year and has awarded more than $150,000 in graduate student scholarships. ... Learn more.
