Tintype portrait of Richard Gomar

FEATURED ITEM

Portrait of Private Richard Gomar

This tintype depicts Richard Gomar, a veteran of the Civil War. At age 17, Gomar enlisted in Company H of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment, the first Black regiment raised in the North. He served through the end of the war and mustered out when the regiment disbanded in 1865.

In this photograph from around 1880, Gomar wears a membership badge of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization for Union Army veterans.

This portrait is one of many in the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment Photographs collection. Collected by a captain of the regiment, the portraits offer a personal look at these comrades in arms.
