Juneteenth, an annual commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States after the Civil War, will be marked by various events across campus and the Pittsburgh community. Watch our social media accounts for dates, times, and more details! The University will be closed 6/19 to commemorate Juneteenth.

The Pride parade in downtown Pittsburgh may be over, but there ae plenty of other Pride celebrations in the Pittsburgh region to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community this month. Pitt will host Pride on the Patio on June 20th from 11am-2pm on the William Pitt Union patio so come visit the School of Social Work booth and say hi!

Idoko appears on KDKA-TV to discuss upcoming CRSP events


Associate Director Ron Idoko was on KDKA-TV last week with Carlos Carter, President and CEO of the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh, discussing an upcoming conference for youth changemakers! Watch Part One and Part Two.


The Youth Changemakers Conference runs from June 29-30.

CRSP joined in facilitating and presenting at a UN side event


More than 130 people attended a side event co-hosted by several University of Pittsburgh units during the second session of the United Nations’ Permanent Forum on People of African Descent.


The May 31 event, “Building a Case for U.S. Reparations,” brought experts and advocates to New York City to explore the urgent need for reparatory justice at the local, national and international levels.


The Frederick Honors College facilitated the event along with Pitt’s Center for Civil Rights and Racial Justice and Ron Idoko, Associate Director of the Center on Race and Social Problems. Other partner organizations included Howard University School of Law, Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs, FirstRepair and the African American Redress Network. Read more.

SSW hosts journal retreat

Durham and Figuereo contribute to Race@Work Cohort 2 Retreat 


The Office of the Provost held its second Race@Work Retreat for newly hired black faculty on May 22 – 25, 2023. Launched in 2022, Race@Work is designed to assist early career appointment and tenure stream faculty from historically underrepresented racial/ethnic backgrounds with building strong networks of peers, mentors, and practical tools to enable them to thrive personally and professional at Pitt.  Read more.

Eckstrom wins award


Stephanie Eckstrom,MSW Regional Program Director, Pitt-Bradford MSW Program was awarded the 2023 Gateway to Equity Award from the Bradford American Association of University Women. The Bradford branch is one of the oldest around, just celebrating its 102 year.  Read more.

Tomorrow: Mobilizing Communities for Action: How Organizations Can Come Together to Prevent Gun Violence


Amidst growing gun violence in our communities, how can government, the private sector, and community based non-profit organizations come together to address the root causes of this epidemic? Please join us at this forum, which will examine the ways in which we can collaborate to proactively create opportunity and make our region safe for children, their families, and their communities. We will be joined by a number of local and national keynote speakers, and then engage in a community conversation about how we can best work together to keep our communities safe.

Rooted in Community on Friday, June 16th 


As part of the University of Pittsburgh Juneteenth programming, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will host Rooted in Community on Friday, June 16th in partnership with the Office of PittServes and the Office of Engagement and Community Affairs. This event aims to create sustained relationships with communities surrounding the University and educate our Pitt community on the rich history ingrained in those communities. University students, staff, and faculty will volunteer at numerous community gardens in and surrounding the greater Pittsburgh area. 

 

There are four different community garden clean-ups occurring on the 16th: one in Knoxville, McKeesport, the Hill District, and Homewood. The projects will run from 10 am – 2 pm with transportation being provided to and from campus if needed. Please see the links below for the four projects:
