Red Cross Worker Preparing Food for Soldiers Standing Nearby
This photograph is one of nearly 300 that Margaret Hall, a WWI American Red Cross worker, collected as a volunteer in France, in 1918. It depicts the typical hustle of canteen service for soldiers and is in stark contrast to Hall’s desolate images of battlefields and devastated towns. When she returned to the states, she organized these photographs with her written observations to create a narrative of her war experience. The MHS holds one of the four narratives she created.
