Disposing of Yard Waste in the Off Season

We've had a few warm days these past couple of weeks, which means many of you may have started cleaning up your gardens and picking up brush. You've filled your paper yard waste bags, but curbside collection doesn't start until next month... Now what?

Yard waste can be composted in your own backyard! Composting captures nutrients from decomposed leaves, grass, and other vegetative waste, and the resulting compost is a nutrient-rich soil amendment that will enhance your soil, yard, and garden come spring. Learn more about the benefits of at-home composting on our Composting page, as well as how to get started. Always check with your local DPW first to determine if your city has any regulations on composting!

Another way to dispose of your yard waste in the off season is by taking it to a composting facility such as Spurt Industries in Wixom. At a composting facility, your yard waste decomposes and becomes a rich, black humus that is used in gardens and landscaping projects all while being kept out of the landfill. Check locally to find a composting facility that accepts yard waste near you!

March 18 - Global Recycling Day

On Global Recycling Day, take a moment to consider the items you throw away on a daily basis - are they truly waste, or can they be recycled? Knowing what is and is not accepted in your local recycling program gives you the opportunity to conserve resources and help foster a circular economy. As consumers, you have the power to make a lasting change by taking direct action - that is, recycling right and making sustainable choices every day!

Ask yourself the following questions on Global Recycling Day (and every day!):

  • Am I disposing of my used items properly so that they can be recycled?
