Mayor Gainey presents social work month proclamation


Director of the Center on Race and Social Problems Kya Conner and Associate Professor James Huguley joined social work students and social workers at Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey's event presenting a City Proclamation "Uplifting Social Work Month." MSW alumna's struggle with leukemia inspires Young Adult Survivors United


MSW alumna Stephanie Samolovitch, of Mars, was planning a career as a pharmacist when, two weeks before her 20th birthday, she was diagnosed with leukemia, joining a growing number of young adults who face cancer. Wanting to help other survivors, Samolovitch, 38, changed her career path and earned a master’s degree in social work from the University of Pittsburgh. After graduating, she facilitated a support group before launching Young Adult Survivors United in March 2020. Read more.
