The National Park Service is accepting applications for the third round of funding for the Semiquincentennial Grant Program. This grant program was created by Congress in 2020 to support the preservation of sites and structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places that commemorate the founding of the nation.

JetBlue is coming full circle. The airline announced Wednesday that longtime airline industry vet Marty St. George will join the carrier as its new president later this month. St. George replaces Joanna Geraghty as she takes over the top job from outgoing CEO Robin Hayes. St. George, who has more than 30 years of experience in the industry, most recently served as chief commercial officer at Santiago, Chile-based LATAM Airlines. He joined that carrier in 2020.

The Maryland Department of Agriculture has announced the appointment of six new members to the Maryland Horse Industry Board. Two current members have been reappointed to serve. Each member appointed will serve a four-year term on the board. “The Maryland Horse Industry Board is vital to ensuring the Maryland horse industry remains strong while preserving the hard work of the thousands who are connected to the industry,” said Maryland Department of Agriculture Secretary Kevin Atticks. “I welcome and congratulate the new members and those being reappointed.”

The Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation kicked off Black History Month with an exhibit at the Harmony Hall Arts Center in Fort Washington, Maryland. This year’s theme was Black musicians and local music venues.
During the Jim Crow era, Black musicians were regularly excluded from performing at venues around the D.C. area. Thus, a network of performance venues was created called the “Chitlin’ Circuit.”

Join Elena as she uses music to explore and rediscover her Nicaraguan roots and find her own voice and identity through art. Throughout this dynamic show, we will explore the unique taste of Central American culture and folklore through original and traditional Nicaraguan music, interspersed with poetry and dance.*

A 17-year-old ballerina from Glenn Dale, Maryland, has been living in London and attending the prestigious Royal Ballet School for the past three years. She is on track to graduate in July. Rebecca Stewart grew up training at the Citydance conservatory in North Bethesda, Maryland. During the pandemic, Stewart said she started taking Zoom classes offered by the Royal Ballet School. After noticing her talent on Zoom, the directors of the school invited her to audition for a full-time spot.

Hyattsville-based chef Tobias Dorzon was recently featured on the “CBS Mornings” show. Dorzon, a former NFL player who now runs the popular Huncho House restaurant at University Town Center at 6451 America Blvd., was the subject of a five-minute segment on the popular channel about becoming a top chef and his unusual career path.
“Typically, you don’t see people like me, you don’t see people that have tattoos that talk the way I talk, that dress the way I dress,” he told co-host Tony Dokoupil.

The Dog Haus Biergarten will open in College Park on Sunday, Feb. 4. Located inside the new City Hall complex at 7401 Baltimore Ave., the outpost of the California-based chain specializes in gourmet hot dogs, sausages and burgers made with hormone- and antibiotic-free Angus beef and served on King’s Hawaiian rolls.
The main offerings come with toppings like smoked bacon, pickled jalapeños, and sauerkraut, but the menu also includes chicken sandwiches, Impossible burgers and breakfast burritos, and side options like chili cheese fries, onion rings and tater tots.

Last year’s DC Boat Show at National Harbor was the District’s first boat show in 15 years, and it returns for an encore this spring. Tickets are on sale now for the boat show which runs from May 3-5. General admission tickets are $30 per person, $20 for active military and first responders.

Primark is coming to the Mall at Prince George’s.
The Ireland-based affordable fashion store will move into a 30,000-square-foot space in the Hyattsville shopping center by early 2025.
The space had previously been occupied by a J.C. Penney department store, which announced it would close in 2020 amid a nationwide restructuring as part of a Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The city of Mount Rainier recently installed new wayfinding signs along Route 1 on Rhode Island Avenue. The color-coded signs direct people toward local amenities, including the library, restaurants, art studios, and a business/shopping area. Posted on top of four-foot poles, the four signs designed by Rockville Sign Co. are clearly visible from a passing car or pedestrian. The current wayfinding trend started as a guerrilla effort in 2012 in Raleigh, N.C., when a grad student posted signs that showed how far it would take to walk or bike to local attractions.

The city of Hyattsville has installed several solar-powered messaging boards in local parks. Designed by Cambridge, Mass.-based Soofa the signs use the same electronic ink screen technology that is used in a Kindle e-reader, which makes them dramatically more efficient than traditional screens. The kiosks were installed recently at Driskell Park, Heurich Park and on the Rhode Island Avenue Trolley Trail near The Spot pop-up park.
