Curley Family Weekly Bulletin

Week of February 19-25, 2024

See below to find out what is happening at Curley!

From the President

On the first Sunday of Lent the Gospel passage is about Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness, days he spent in prayer and fasting. It is a major reason we observe Lent for 40 days. This year’s reading is from Mark (1:12-15), and is quite short, simply saying that Jesus was tempted, without going into the details we read about in Matthew and Luke. It’s a very important reminder, however, that often when we set the goal of doing something good, or increasing our time of prayer, or performing a discipline like fasting, we will be tempted to give up. If Jesus was tempted, we shouldn’t be surprised that we are tempted. It is our perseverance in what we have chosen to do that leads to success in these temptations, and a stronger will to resist whatever temptations may come our way. May the Lord bless our Lenten goals and strengthen us to carry through with them.

-- Fr. Donald '70

From the Principal

As we enter this season of Lent, I pray that this is a spiritually fruitful time for you and your family. It is often difficult to free ourselves of life’s distractions and burdens and find a quiet time for prayer and reflection. I hope that these 40 days provide you some time for just that.

As we consider the value of time, I also ask our families to consider the valuable time our Curley Men have during each school day. From time to time, we have scheduled “early dismissal” days to allow time for faculty professional development, which supports our teachers in their instructional responsibilities. Our records show that the rate of student absences increases on these early dismissal days. This has been true for each of the three early dismissal days that have occurred this year. I can only assume that some families do not consider these days valuable. Please know that instruction continues and assessments occur on these days. Increased absences disrupt the continuity of learning and the work of our teachers.

Calendar Reminder

We have realized a mistake on the school calendar and will be making a change to the class schedule for the month of March.

March 1, 2024, is now a professional development day for Faculty/Staff. There are no classes for students on that day. This will allow our faculty to participate in the Archdiocesan Professional Day program.

March 8, 2024, is now a school day with classes for all students. So that we do not have to adjust the school schedule days any further, Friday, March 8, will follow the D3 class schedule.

The app includes a Lent challenge that all parents are invited to do with their son each day or on ones own.

From the College Counseling Office

Class of 2024 Parents

  • Financial Aid packets are later this year than normal. FAFSA published a statement on January 30, 2024, that FAFSA information will not be sent to colleges until March. The colleges then need to process the information internally and send it to families. Deposits to tell which school your son is enrolling at are due May 1, 2024. Do not feel pressured to make a decision before you receive the financial aid information. Please contact us or the colleges' financial aid office if you have questions.
  • Please work with your student to update his SCOIR account as he receives decisions!

Class of 2025 Parents

  • We recommend Juniors take the SAT or ACT this spring. Please go to collegeboard.org or act.org to find and location that works for you.
  • College Counselors are meeting individually with each junior, please make sure to check with your son if he has had his meeting and what we discussed! We went over how to research colleges, SAT/ACT options and finding the right fit.
