Professors Sara Goodkind and Jeff Shook will appear on WTAE-TV on the show "WTAE Listens" February 5, 2023 at 11:30am to discuss youth violence and their report Post-Shuman Visioning: Reimagining Safety for Young People and Communities.

Field Faculty Profile: Melvin Cherry, Jr.


Field Assistant Professor Melvin Cherry, Jr., MSW has had the great opportunity to work with both BASW and MSW students in the Pitt School of Social Work. He serves as the field advisor for BASW students and as a field and academic advisor for MSW students. Melvin has taught courses in both the BASW and MSW programs, over the past seven years. At the MSW level, he places students interested in Integrated Healthcare, Mental Health, as well as Generalist placements for first-year MSW students. Melvin has taught Generalist Social Work Practice, and the Generalist Field Seminar, as well as Introduction to Social Work. He has also had the pleasure of guest lecturing in the past in the Grief and Loss and Clinical Social Work with African American Families courses. Read more.

Why Pitt School of Social Work?


I was introduced to the BASW program through an Intro to Social Work course taught by Professor Keith Caldwell. He helped me connect with others in the program and showed me just how expansive the field of social work truly is! From the start, everyone in the school was so welcoming and informative. SWAG Award article in the Tribune Review


The Tribune Review article covered the 2023 SWAG Awards (Happening March 25th) and the awardees which include Director of Community Engagement Aliya Durham and SWAG Changemaker Awardee Director of Professional Education Molly Allwein. Other awardees include alumnae: Anette Nance, Kiera Mallett, Kimberly Washington, and Tierra L. Thorne.

New Fellowship Available to MSW students


The Marc Cherna Fellows program is an exclusive opportunity for University of Pittsburgh students pursuing graduate degrees in the School of Social Work to gain experience within an organization that designs, plans, organizes and implements human services for over 200,000 people and with a network of providers. This Fellows program is jointly administered by the University's School of Social Work and the Institute of Politics (IOP). The IOP was created in 1989 as a nonpartisan policy organization serving Southwestern Pennsylvania and delivers timely information about issues affecting our region to elected officials, community leaders, and the public. The Cherna Fellow will embark on experiential learning opportunities within Allegheny County and address all of the core competencies in social work while developing knowledge and practice in public policy analysis, development, and advocacy. Faculty member co-chairing conference


Professor Danny Rosen is co-chairing the Bridging Connections in Addiction Research (BCAR) Networking and Scientific Retreat event on February 1st.


The event will showcase several Pitt research centers, promote recent work from scholars across the university, and give BCAR an opportunity to share updates from their pilot projects supported by the Pittsburgh Foundation. This gathering is a big step forward in promoting interdisciplinary addiction research at Pitt and over 100 people have registered to attend. See the program here.
