As the days get shorter and cooler, many of us are headed back to the classroom and resuming regular routines. For me, the crisp fall air signals new beginnings.
This month, I am launching two new projects to connect community leaders as we continue on our path of sustainable growth. It is important to me that our City fosters economic development opportunities, provides a welcoming environment for new residents, and is committed to protecting local biodiversity.
The Mayor’s Task Force on Labour Attraction will strengthen existing partnerships and help develop new strategies to encourage skilled workers to seek career opportunities in Greater Sudbury. The Task Force will also work to ensure that new residents and their families are welcomed and supported as they settle into their new home.
Another initiative is the Mayor’s Task Force for 30x30. The name reflects the group’s mandate: to develop a local strategy to support the federal government’s goal of protecting 30 per cent of land and water by 2030. This group will identify which natural areas within the City’s boundaries are already protected, and propose strategies for protecting more areas for their ecological, cultural, or recreational value. Decades of landscape restoration have already shown us what is possible when we work together – and now it is time for us to be a model to the rest of the country.
