The City of Greater Sudbury - News and Updates

In this month's edition: The Mayor's Task Force, Fall Events, and Brutis, the Animal of the Month

A Message From the Mayor

As the days get shorter and cooler, many of us are headed back to the classroom and resuming regular routines. For me, the crisp fall air signals new beginnings.

This month, I am launching two new projects to connect community leaders as we continue on our path of sustainable growth. It is important to me that our City fosters economic development opportunities, provides a welcoming environment for new residents, and is committed to protecting local biodiversity.

The Mayor’s Task Force on Labour Attraction will strengthen existing partnerships and help develop new strategies to encourage skilled workers to seek career opportunities in Greater Sudbury. The Task Force will also work to ensure that new residents and their families are welcomed and supported as they settle into their new home.

Another initiative is the Mayor’s Task Force for 30x30. The name reflects the group’s mandate: to develop a local strategy to support the federal government’s goal of protecting 30 per cent of land and water by 2030. This group will identify which natural areas within the City’s boundaries are already protected, and propose strategies for protecting more areas for their ecological, cultural, or recreational value. Decades of landscape restoration have already shown us what is possible when we work together – and now it is time for us to be a model to the rest of the country.

Meet Brutis, Our Animal of the Month!

Brutus is a 1.5-year-old American Bulldog mix. He is a genuine goofball who enjoys playing with his toys and would love to be the star of your family. Brutus would benefit from a family with dog experience. He does need to be reminded of his manners and when he needs to listen. Brutus is selective with the dogs he likes; a meet and greet is recommended if you have another dog in the family.

To meet Brutus, visit the City’s Adopt a Pet page and apply under Dogs for Adoption.

Celebrating 50 Years!

Fifty years ago, VETAC, City Council’s advisory panel on regreening, was formed to address Sudbury’s barren landscape, the result of years of early day logging and smelting activities. Since then, the expertise and guidance provided by the panel have contributed to a dramatic change in our landscape.

Since 1973, more than 10 million trees have been planted and the City’s Regreening Program has become world-renowned.

The panel’s many accomplishments have and continue to shape our city, improving the quality of life for future generations.

Fire Safety Tip of the Month: Butt Out Smoking Fires

Fire Prevention

Smoking is the leading cause of fatal fires in Ontario. To prevent smoking fires:

  • Never smoke in bed
  • Use large, deep ashtrays that cannot be knocked over
  • Empty ashes into a metal container and put it outside
  • Do not extinguish cigarettes in plant pots
  • Encourage smokers to smoke outside
