Infinite Power: Take Your Share of the Texas Sun

by Patrice 'Pete' Parsons, TXSES Executive Director

According to a recent U.S. Census Bureau report, nearly 1 million people have moved to Texas from another state or abroad since 2022, bringing Texas’ population to more than 30 million. That’s not a typo. While Harris County added the most residents between 2000-2022, Tarrant, Bexar, Collin, Denton, Fort Bend, Travis, Williamson, Montgomery, and Dallas counties did their part, too.

While those numbers might bring worrisome thoughts of more traffic, construction and crowds, we at TXSES are all smiles. We see those numbers as more eyes to see and ears to hear from us about the value, benefits and results of sound, favorable solar policies that are growing a strong distributed solar industry in Texas’ rapidly changing clean energy economy.

Infinite Power: Take Your Share of the Texas Sun is our response to unrelenting consumer demand for solar while addressing the unreliability of the Texas grid. This statewide educational campaign aims to double the amount of distributed solar in Texas by 2030.

Counting Texas’ solar rooftops. The numbers may surprise you.

By Ethan Miller, TXSES Intern

It’s not hard to find estimates for utility-scale solar capacity in Texas; ERCOT regularly releases that information. What has been harder to find are estimates of distributed (rooftop) solar. Until now, getting a realistic idea of how many buildings had rooftop systems was practically guesswork. Through the Texas Solar Energy Society, I connected with Larry Howe, a TXSES policy committee member, who in his spare time was working on such an estimate. After meeting with him and reviewing his methodology and data sources, we came up with a rough idea on the volume of rooftop solar installations in the state.

Energy Dept. Pours Billions Into Power Grids but Warns It’s Not Enough

The Energy Department on October 30 announced $1.3 billion to help build three large power lines across six states, part of a new gusher of money from Washington to upgrade America's electric grids so they can handle more wind and solar power and better tolerate extreme weather. But officials warned that money won't be enough to meet President Biden's goal to power the country with clean energy by 2035.

Key lessons for an economical and reliable path to a 100% clean electricity system

Motivated by climate change action and spurred by declining clean energy costs, the power sector is faced with an equally ambitious task of transitioning the electricity grid to 100% clean. Several states across the U.S. have set clean goals within the next 30 years, but few have conducted the analysis that informs a path to reliably reach these goals.
