Back to School Reminders and Updates
Updated Atrium Safety Procedures
NDA regularly reviews and revises its safety procedures and protocols to ensure the safety of its students and staff. NDA follows best practices for school safety as recommended by law enforcement and implemented throughout the country.

All adult visitors who arrive at school during regular business hours will need to follow these procedures to enter the atrium:
  • The atrium receptionist will engage each visitor in conversation through the intercom at the entrance door.
  • Only one adult visitor will be allowed to enter the atrium at a time. The adult visitor will need to report directly to the atrium receptionist desk.
  • The atrium receptionist will resolve the needs of the visitor at the desk before engaging the next visitor at the atrium entrance door.
  • Any visitor who needs to leave the atrium to proceed into another area of the school building must have his/her driver’s license scanned by our Visitor Management System. Visitors must register their vehicle with the atrium receptionist. All approved visitors must be escorted by an adult staff member at all times. Visitors must check out through the atrium receptionist upon departure.

School Day

The school day begins at 7:55 a.m. daily. Students need to be in their first period classroom before 7:55 a.m. Students who are not in the classroom by 7:55 a.m. will be considered tardy to school. Students who are 10 minutes late for a class are considered absent from that class. The school building opens at 7 a.m. daily.

The school day ends at 3:17 p.m. Seniors with Senior Privilege (8th hour off) may leave after the 7th hour. Seniors who remain on campus during their Senior Privilege time must be in the Commons or Library. The school building closes at 4 p.m. on regular school days Monday through Thursday and at 3:30 p.m. on Fridays. After school, students may congregate in the commons.

Students who have scheduled activities after 4 p.m. may remain in the atrium until the start of their activity. Otherwise all students without a scheduled evening activity need to leave the building when it closes at 4 p.m. (Monday through Thursday) or 3:30 p.m. (Fridays).

Attendance Reminders

Tardies to First Period: NDA emphasizes being prompt to school as this is a necessary habit for success in life. If your student is tardy to their first period, and it should be excused due to circumstances out of the student’s control, please contact the Main Office at 429-6104 by 9 a.m. to excuse your student.

Students who are tardy to their first period must report directly to the Main Office. Students are permitted two excused tardies to their first hour, per semester. All tardies thereafter will be unexcused and the student will receive school consequences for their tardiness. All tardies are considered unexcused until the student’s parent contacts the Main Office to have them excused.

Since we value the individual parent communication for each student, only the student’s parent/guardian can excuse his/her tardiness. This applies to carpool situations also. In a carpool, each student’s parent must contact the Main Office to excuse his/her student.

Tardiness of more than 10 minutes will be considered an absence. Please call the Main Office for special circumstances.

Appointment Process for Students to leave School: Off-campus appointments during the school day are discouraged. If an appointment is necessary and unavoidable, permission to leave school for the appointment may be requested by phone at 429-6104 or in writing to the Main Office. Please contact the Main Office prior to the appointment, preferably 24 hours in advance but at a minimum at least 2 hours so that all appropriate passes may be issued. The time that you provide to our Main Office staff is the time that the student is dismissed from class. Please add approximately 3 minutes of time for your student to go to their locker and check out of the atrium. Students must pick up a pink pass from the Main Office. Your student presents this pass to their teacher that indicates the time that they are to leave class. When leaving for a scheduled appointment, the student must check out at the atrium desk and give the Atrium Receptionist the pink pass. Upon returning to school, the student must report directly to the Main Office and present official verification of the appointment. Official verification is a signed note from the appointment destination. Students will need this note to be eligible to participate in extracurricular activities.

Anticipated Absences: If an absence of multiple days is known in advance, the student must present a signed parent note to the Main Office three to five days prior to the absence. This allows for adequate time to complete the process. The process is designed to facilitate communication between your student and his/her teachers. The student will then be given a green form to notify each teacher that the upcoming absence is excused. The student will have each teacher sign the form. After all the teachers have signed the form, then the parent/guardian must sign the form. The form will need to be on file in the Main Office one day prior to the absence.

Attendance Records: If a parent/guardian does not notify the office about an absence or a tardy, it is considered unexcused. Student attendance records will not be changed 2 school days after the absence/tardy.

Student Drop Off/Pick Up

The safety and well being of our students is extremely important. All students who are dropped off or picked up from school must access their vehicles in the driveway near the main entrance of NDA. Students are not to be dropped off or picked up on Maryhill Drive. Due to Mason Street and the bus loading zone, Maryhill Drive is reserved for buses to drop off/load buses.

Wireless Earbuds (Air Pods) & Personal Electronic Devices

NDA values the interpersonal, face-to-face relationships with its students. This relationship and skill development is critical to the learning process and functioning in society. In a world driven by technology, particularly with Personal Electronic Devices like smartphones and air pods, we can easily lose these necessary skills and relationships by focusing inward into our devices when we are called to focus outward beyond ourselves. NDA’s Personal Electronic Device policy (pages 17-18) is designed to help train our students to look beyond themselves or their device, to use their device safely and appropriately, and to foster an environment free of distractions so the students can maximize their experience and their parents' investment in their education.

For the 2022-23 school year, our Personal Electronic Device policy has been updated and wireless earbuds (air pods) are considered a Personal Electronic Device. Students who violate this policy will have their device confiscated and turned into the office. When students are in violation with earbuds, the faculty & staff will confiscate both the earbuds and the cell phone together. Students with multiple violations of this policy are subject to lose the privilege of carrying these devices on them throughout the school building for a period of time.

If students need to use earbuds for their laptop or chromebook and they have lost the privilege of using wireless earbuds, they must have wired earbuds. The atrium desk has wired earbuds for sale at a nominal cost. Please refer to the full policy in our Student & Parent Handbook, click here, on pgs. 17-18.

Students are not allowed to text or check messages during the school day. Please do not expect your student to check their text messages during the school day. Students may go to the Main Office and with permission, check their messages and voicemails. If you need to contact your student during the school day, please contact the Main Office at 429-6100 and we will give your student the message. Please refer to the full policy in our Student & Parent Handbook on pgs. 17-18.
