To celebrate the Hispanic and Latine communities and the rich cross-cultural connections centered on birth justice, we'd like to highlight Semilla Sagrada, a program of SisterWeb San Francisco Community Doula Network (SisterWeb).


Semilla Sagrada is a direct service program created by Latine doulas of different nationalities to support Latine families and birthworkers in San Francisco.

PTBI-funded research published in Health Equity journal



The MEND study's paper on stakeholder-identified challenges and recommendations for clinician anti-bias training was recently published in Health Equity. Sarah Garrett is the principal investigator of this study and plans to publish a hospital-facing guide and a policy report to accompany the scholarly paper.

The California Black Birth Justice Agenda is a tool and a call to action for everyone to engage in the strategic advancement of birth justice for Black Californians. It was a collaborative effort between a number of partners over a 12-month period.

Centering Black Mothers in California: Insights into Racism Health and Well-being for Black Women and Infants



The California Department of Public Health and the UCSF Center for Health Equity published cutting-edge evidence based on statewide birthing population data.


The report provides a groundbreaking amount of context as the first report of its kind to center Black birthing people and racism as a root cause of inequitable birth outcomes.


It contains an extensive reference list and the most current data on birthing disparities in California. It integrates storytelling through quotes alongside data to support the research.

Fellowship Spotlight:

Kayla Karvonen, MD, MAS


Kayla will graduate from the PTBI two-year post-doctoral fellowship program in 2024. As a neonatology fellow, her research investigates racism as a root cause and racial disparities in health outcomes among preterm infants.


The fellowship is focused on reducing disparities in preterm birth and improving maternal and neonatal outcomes. Fellows have the opportunity to work with world-class researchers and mentors, develop ideas and partnerships within a collaborative network, and formally build additional research skills.

2) Engage patients and communities in all phases of healthcare algorithm lifecycle and earn trustworthiness


3) Ensure accountability, equity, and justice in outcomes from healthcare algorithms
