UNLV AND THE VEGAS CHAMBER'S DC FLY-IN

Every year, Nevada's leaders, including leaders from Southern Nevada's institutions of higher education, go to Washington, D.C., to advocate and meet with policy makers on federal issues that directly impact employers. It is the largest Fly-in of business leaders from Nevada to Washington, D.C.

This year's trip took place September 17 – 21, and included meetings with Congressional members, think tanks, national trade organizations, and policy groups. There were also several receptions during the trip to further build relationships with Congressional leadership and to strengthen existing connections.

Powerful words coming from Nevada’s university and college presidents on the challenges and barriers to higher education in Southern Nevada. They enjoyed speaking on the panel, "Why Employers Should Care about the Future of Higher Education".

Making the economic case for infrastructure investment with Tom Burns, Executive Director of Diversify Nevada, Dr. David Damore, Executive Director of Brookings Mountain West at UNLV, and Andrew Woods, Director of UNLV’s Center of Business and Economic Research.

President Whitfield enjoyed being part of the largest annual DC Fly-In ever where he was able to advocate for all Nevadans with over 250 local leaders. It was a week full of impact!

Rebels partnered with Lewis E. Rowe Elementary School on August 4th, to provide a UNLV Resource Fair in conjunction with the school’s annual Back-to-School Teacher Meet-and-Greet. Immunizations, scoliosis and vision checks, backpacks, and school supplies were just some of the offerings UNLV provided for 600 PK-5 Rowerunner students.

UNLV partnered with Whitney Recreational Center on August 5th, to distribute school supplies and resource information to nearly 2,700 youth at the Center’s Saturday Before School event.

More than 600 K-12 students received school supplies and resource information from UNLV at the Parkdale Back-to-School Fair, held on August 6th.

On August 11, President Whitfield joined Junior Achievement of Southern Nevada to celebrate the new JA Inspiration Center. Michael Chrome from the Las Vegas Raiders was on hand to assist the President with demolition of a wall to mark the start of construction on this important resource for our community.

Even though Hurricane Hilary brought the event to an early end, UNLV was still able to participate in Windmill Library’s Back-to-School Youth Literacy Festival, held August 20th, which enabled the university to share UNLV resources with attendees and provide much needed school supplies to youth.

Rebels were well represented and honored to attend the ACLU of Nevada's annual Celebration of Civil Rights event which took place on August 24th. The event recognized those from our community who have helped make impactful changes that protect and advance civil rights for all Nevadans.

On August 25th, UNLV partnered with Opportunity Village to support their Employee Health & Wellness Fair. This event connected Opportunity Village employees with a variety of UNLV offerings, including medical, dental, and mental health services available to them and their family members.

UNLV, in partnership with Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the City of Las Vegas, hosted a community-wide fundraiser to provide relief for those impacted by the Maui fires. The event was held at Allegiant Stadium on September 30th, in advance of the UNLV-Hawaii football game, and included entertainment and activities for all ages.
