A Message from our VP

The first few weeks of the semester have flown right on by and I cannot believe we are well into our fall routines.  We have experienced a great start to this new year and I very much appreciate all you have done to welcome and support our students!

I hope you saw the information for the True Blue branding sessions the week of September 11 at Armstrong and Statesboro; make every effort to participate and share your thoughts on what makes GE distinctive.  I hope every department will be represented in these sessions and share your ideas.

In addition, Georgia Southern has been selected to host the Georgia NASPA Drive-In Conference on the Armstrong Campus in February 2024.  Jodi Kennedy serves on the GA NASPA Board and will be our liaison to the board while we plan.  Thanks to Memory Littles,  Zwisel Gandia, Cherie Gaume, Justine Cozza for volunteering to plan this event.  If you are interested in serving on the host committee, please let me know.  Consider attending the conference and presenting.  More details forthcoming.

President Kyle Marrero has shared the State of the University online and in person at Armstrong and Statesboro. I hope you noticed (as I did) he celebrated the successes of all your work in the co curricular environment.  Keep up the great work and GATA!

Hail Southern!

Mental Health Awareness and Suicide Prevention Week

The Counseling Center and the Office of Student Wellness and Health Promotion are partnering to bring Mental Health Awareness and Suicide Prevention Week to Georgia Southern this September. During this week, there will be several events on both the Armstrong and Statesboro campuses aimed at raising awareness and starting often difficult conversations about mental health, reducing stigma surrounding mental health concerns, and promoting mental wellbeing! These events will allow students to get connected with resources, and learn and practice skills to enhance their own mental health as well as the wellbeing of their fellow Eagles. These events are open to all students.

Wellness Through Writing

Wellness comes in different forms, such as journaling and building community. In partnership with the Academic Success Center, Student Wellness and Health Promotion would like to invite students to attend this event to meet other students and learn about using journaling as a means of checking in on yourself. This event is open to all students, including students who identify as first-generation college students.

Convos & Courage

Having conversations about mental health can be difficult, the Counseling Center and Student Wellness and Health Promotion are hosting an event to help you with these conversations. During this event, students will learn tips on how to start conversations on mental health with a friend, and will be able to leave words of hope for anyone struggling with their mental health. The Counseling Center will also be providing mental health screenings during the event.

University Housing

Operation Move-In

University Housing wants to thank everyone who participated and supported our Operation Move-In efforts. We had another successful move-in on both our Savannah and Statesboro campuses. Shout out to the Office of Leadership and Community Engagement for their continued support of organizing our volunteer efforts.

This year, University Housing launched the first ever University Housing Spirit Week! Spirit Week was an effort to help residents build hall identity and pride, as well as build connections with their neighbors and complex staff. This week-long strategy was considered the kick off to the year for each residential community across both the Savannah and Statesboro campuses. After a full week of engaging activities with our students, University Housing was thrilled to have a total of 1,168 unique attendees across the two campuses!
