CMU’s Deeper Conversations Initiative Aims To Build Bridges of Connection and Understanding

CMU has launched Deeper Conversations, a university-wide initiative aimed at bringing together new and existing opportunities to explore divergent viewpoints and take a broader view on some of today’s most challenging issues. An anchor effort of Deeper Conversations is an academic series presented by Dietrich College and Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy to illuminate the historical, political, cultural and narrative background of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and to study the current Israel-Hamas war from multiple perspectives.

Citizen Scientists Contribute to Motor Learning Research

A new research study by Jonathan Tsay in the Department of Psychology examined the results from data generated by citizen scientists using a simple web-based motor test. The big data approach provides researchers with a unique way to explore how people correct for motor control errors.

The Ethics of AI: Building Systems That Benefit Society

Alex John London, the K&L Gates Professor of Ethics and Computational Technologies in the Department of Philosophy, teamed up Hoda Heidari, the K&L Gates Career Development Professor in Ethics and Computational Technologies in the School of Computer Science, to explore what it means for an AI system to benefit a user.

Cullen Named Dean's Innovation Scholar

Dietrich College has named Simon Cullen, assistant teaching professor in the Department of Philosophy, a Dean’s Innovation Scholar. The award recognizes significant innovation in course design, teaching practice and learning outcomes assessment among teaching-track faculty in Dietrich College, as well as the promise of ongoing creative and effective innovation.

  • Stats San Francisco Alumni Event: The Department of Statistics & Data Science will host a luncheon on Thursday, Feb. 8, from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Per Diem - Financial District in San Francisco, California. During the event, Rebecca Nugent, department head, will share updates with the group. Register for the event.


  • Stats and SDS San Francisco Alumni Event: The departments of Statistics & Data Science and Social and Decision Sciences will host an alumni happy hour on Thursday, Feb. 8, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Vision Meeting Room at the Hotel Nia (200 Independence Drive) in Menlo Park, California.   • Los Angeles Presidential Tour: Join CMU President Farnam Jahanian for “Pioneering the New Era of Artificial Intelligence.” The event will include a discussion about the university, its recent successes and the inspiring vision for its future of transformation. The program will be followed by a reception on Tuesday, Feb. 27, from 6:30 to 10 p.m. at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles, California. Register for the event.
