as Savior and Lord, to share his healing and transformation with all people.

Rebuild, Restore, Renew

The Orchestra

Everyone has different musical tastes. Mine are pretty simple, some might say pedestrian. My father suggested that when I was in college it would be a time for me to branch out and study some things that were foreign to me, as I might never get a chance to do that again.

Well I took drama appreciation (and went to avant-garde theatre all over Los Angeles), I took Cinema (which, at U.S.C., was a big deal and tried to learn how to get the most out of classic films of the day) and I took music appreciation to gain a basic understanding of classical music and become familiar with some of the great composers in particular Bach, Beethoven and Mozart.

I went off to seminary a few years later and enrolled in “music school” to learn the basics of sight-reading. I discovered I love to sing. Again something I might not have discovered on my own. I grew to love the Episcopal Hymnal and many of the tunes and words have become my spiritual friends and mentors as I have sung them, memorized them, and prayed them over 40+ years.

I was thinking of music lessons that have stuck with me over the years and I want to share two with you. The first is if you want to learn teamwork you should join a choir or bell group. Listening to another person, trying to blend with them, practice timing together cooperating together and counting on one another are lessons better learned around a musical instrument rather than a sports field. Too much competition in sports for most people to learn the blessing of teamwork.

The second is the way an orchestra prepares to play. One person, usually the first violin, plays an A and miraculously everyone in the orchestra spends the next few minutes making sure that they are in tune with that instrument.

Jesus in his teachings, in his sacrificial love and life, is the one who sets the tune. As Christian’s we are called to make sure our instrument, our lives, are in tune with his so we may make music, make ministry, make prayer, and make service, that brings glory to God.

May you take time to tune up, and tune in to what God is doing in your life and life of others and may you play your instrument in a team that brings forward the work of God’s kingdom.

Music Lessons: Thursday rehearsals have been suspended for the "summer" - that is July 22, 28, and August 4th and the 11th.. In this time slot a summer music class is offered. Lessons include understanding music notation, harmonic theory, sight singing vocal production, and other material as requested by participants. These are repeats of sessions offered in the past and there is no expectation that those who attended previous will come again. (Those wishing to review or refresh are, of course, welcome) The class will be held in the regular rehearsal space in the RFC Thursdays through August 11th.

SAVE THE DATE:

We are in the process (Ann Lowe, Fr. Rand, Carol Barker, with a consult from Josh Stambaugh) in revising the Parish bylaws). This is the first undertaking of this since our revision in 2004. The issue of an update arose as we sought permission from the Diocese to construct the “Community Center/Pantry” on our north lot. One of the diocesan suggestions was to take a look at the diocesan bylaws template and see if we wouldn’t make some improvement to ours.

Over the past 6 months, the above group has done just that, and in the coming weeks we will make these available to you for your review as a parish. According to our current bylaws, we need to have a parish meeting to approve changes. We are going to do this immediately after worship on August 14th. The only agenda item will be a vote to approve these bylaw changes.

Please look in the August 3rd Happenings  for the link to these bylaws. If you have questions as you read them, please address them to Carol, Ann Lowe, or myself as soon as possible either by voice or e-mail. Please plan to attend the Special Meeting of the Parish on August 14th to complete the bylaw process.

Grace and Peace,

COVID-19 UPDATE

It’s no secret that COVID infections are increasing in LA County. At a recent briefing for Faith Based Organizations, the health department reported an increase in infections, hospitalizations, and deaths. Omicron BA.4 & BA.5 are the dominate variants in our area and are even more contagious than the variants that came before them. People who have had other forms of COVID-19 do not have immunity to these variants and can easily become infected with them. Fortunately, vaccinations, boosters, and previous infection do seem to protect against getting a serious case.

LA County is currently in the medium risk category, but the Department of Public Health predicts that the county will enter the high-risk category for infection by July 14th. If the risk level stays high for two consecutive weeks, the county will mandate indoor masking in public places. In the meantime, everyone is urged to voluntarily use well-fitting masks indoors in public places.

Masks:

With all masks the key is to find one that fits your face. Different sizes and designs work for different shaped faces. Masks should:

·        Fit your face with no gaps on any side. This can be difficult with surgical masks, so it may be necessary to double mask to get a good fit.

·        Have a metal nose piece that can be compressed to form a seal over your nose and keep the mask in place. The better the seal, the less likely it is that your glasses fog up.

·        Omicron variant has caused health officials to urge people to upgrade their masks from cloth ones to ones that offer more protection such as N95, KN95, KF94, or surgical masks (not general use paper masks).

The following article provides some tips on choosing masks: https://www.nytimes.com/article/covid-masks.html
